Spree SW Gas Stove Risk Assessment
  • Gas Stove Risk Assessment

All Group Leaders to complete prior to Spree SW
  • Thank you so much for bringing a group to Spree SW. We really value the time you have given up helping children and young people to have a great experience. We are really committed to making Spree SW weekend as safe as possible for everyone on site. All Group Leaders must complete this form before the weekend, regardless of whether they willl be using gas or not.

  •  - -
  • Does your group intend to use any appliances that use propane/butane gas at Spree SW for either cooking or lighting?*
  • STEP 1: IDENTIFY MAJOR HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH USING PORTABLE PROPANE/BUTANE APPLIANCES

    • Incompatible adaptor/regulator resulting in incorrect gas pressure.

    • Worn, incorrect or incorrectly fitted hose or other connectors resulting in gas leakage.

    • Appliance placed on unstable surface resulting in tipping.

    • Appliance placed on non-heat resistant surface resulting in overheating.

    • Tent fabric or other material too close to naked flame resulting in fire, or material too close above appliance resulting in overheating by convection/radiation.

    • Appliance used in confined space resulting in deadly carbon monoxide fumes building up, or 'pooling' of the heavier-than-air propane/butane gas at low level if there is leak.

     • Gas canister/cartridge not secured in an upright, stable position, resulting in it falling over and dragging appliance with it.

    • Gas canister/cartridge stored below appliance resulting in inability to reach it to turn it off should a fire start.

    • Inexperienced person allowed to use appliance resulting in potential for accidents.

    • Gas canister/cartridge changed with naked flame nearby resulting in the risk of explosion/fire.

  • STEP 2: LIST ANY GROUPS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE AT RISK FROM THE HAZARDS IDENTIFIED ABOVE

  • STEP 3: TICK THE BOXES TO CONFIRM YOU’VE READ AND WILL IMPLEMENT MEASURES TO CONTROL IDENTIFIED HAZARDS FROM STEP 1

  • *
  • STEP 4: SHARE RISK ASSESSMENT ALONG WITH THESE SAFETY TIPS & INSTRUCTIONS WITH YOUR LEADERS

    • Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) attacks natural rubber which is why only bs-certified hose should be used. Good practice is to replace all hoses every 3 years.

    • If you suspect a leak, try and trace it by smell and then use diluted washing up liquid over suspected joints and look for bubbles. Never use a naked flame to check for leaks!

    • When shutting down a stove, turn off the gas canister/cartridge valve first (which allows gas left in the system to burn off), and then shut the valve on the appliance.

    • Make sure you know how to change a canister/cartridge safely and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • Empty gas canister/cartridges must be disposed of in compliance with local authority regulations. Do not put empty cylinders/cartridges in with regualr household waste.

If you discover a fire in your camping area:

    • Use the bell at the nearest fire point to make everyone aware of the situation.

    • Ensure everyone in your group is in the nearest assembly point and supervised. Check all are accounted for.

    • DO NOT tackle the fire with extinguishers unless the fire is small, easily contained, well away from any fuel source OR someone's life would be in immediate danger without your intervention.

    • DO NOT call the emergency services yourself. Inform the Info Point as soon as possible or call the 24/7 emergency number on the back of your Group Leader Guide.
