The Children’s Business Fair is established to give young entrepreneurs the opportunity to explore the challenging and rewarding process of planning and executing a business venture. The planning and effort required to operate a business, no matter the size or degree of success, is the primary benefit of the experience. By signing and facilitating the participation of your child in the Business Fair you agree to abide by the following, to ensure that your child gets the most out of the experience and gains a better understanding of what real entrepreneurship involves.
I will allow my child to be the CEO of their business. If asked for help I will ask guiding questions and point to available resources to help my child discover. I will remember, this is my child’s business, not mine. Additionally, I will make an effort to make myself knowledgeable about my child’s chosen business and the expectations and operation of the Business Fair, including doing independent research and reading all emails pertaining to the Business Fair.
I will not rob my child of the responsibility of business ownership and resource management including:
Money - Any money needed as an initial investment for supplies, labor or participation fees will come from my child’s personal monies, or will be given to them on loan with the expectation of repayment from their business’ revenue.
Work - I will allow my child to be an employer if needed. I will not myself, nor will I allow anyone else to volunteer to do work for my child. I will ensure anyone who does work for my child negotiates and is paid a fair wage for their labor.
Profit - I will respect that any profit my child earns is a result of their efforts and management and will guide them in responsibly managing their money.
I will ensure my child follows through with their commitment to participate in the fair. I will encourage them, especially if things don’t go according to plan. I will come beside them to help them adapt if necessary and to reflect on the experience both during and after so that they can use the lessons they learn for future ventures.
Finally, and most importantly, I will encourage my child to learn and have fun. I will help them practice good sportsmanship, celebrating their successes as well as the successes of other participants and I will celebrate the lessons they learn with them as they engage in this adventure.
