  • What These Roles Looks Like:

    Sorting and Organizing volunteers help keep the Free Store running by preparing items for shoppers and maintaining the space. This sign-up includes three volunteer roles: • 1. SORTING & ORGANIZING (2.5 hours) This role includes sorting contributions by category, size, and condition, organizing shelves and racks, restocking the floor, and keeping walkways clear. This is a hands-on, active role. You will be standing, moving, lifting, and working throughout the shift. 2. • STORE CARE (2 hour) Helping maintain a clean, and welcoming space throughout 611. 3. • HAUL AWAY (15 minutes) Taking recycling, trash, or unusable items off-site. 611 does not currently have trash or recycling service. Trash and recycling may be disposed of at your home. Items 611 can't use can be taken to a secondhand organization of your choice.

  • Shopping & Access Through Volunteering

    Volunteers receive one shopping experience per shift, and shopping takes place after your shift ends. *Please note that food is reserved for shoppers and provided through Evanston Community Fridges.
  • If you would like to receive food:

    Sign up for a shopping appointment, instead of shopping after your shift and you will shop during your Shopping Appointment. *You may sign up for one shopping appointment per week that you volunteer. Additional volunteer shifts in the same week do not increase the number of shopping appointments.*
  • Essentials

    Volunteers may request essentials while shopping after a shift.To help keep supplies available for everyone, essentials are limited to once per week.

    Volunteer shifts are limited. This system helps more people participate and access the store. Please sign up for only one shift per role and complete your shift before signing up again. You may hold up to 3 total shifts at a time (one per role). *Haul away is excluded from this limit
