  • Want to run for City Council or school board trustee in the 2026 Markham Municipal Election?

  • Complete the eligibility and readiness checklist to ensure you have everything you need to register as a candidate in the 2026 Markham Municipal Election. At the end of the checklist, you will be asked if you wish to register online or in-person. Selecting online registration will launch your online registration form. It takes about 20 minutes to register.

  • Candidates who haven't registered by 4 PM on August 20th must register in person at the Markham Civic Centre's Legislative Services counter. People who are in line with their supporting documents before 2 PM on August 21st will have a chance to register. We can't accept forms after this deadline, or offer extensions for incomplete or partial submissions.

  • To register, you'll be asked to for the following:

    1. Photo ID
      • Examples: Ontario driver's licence, Ontario photo card, Canadian passport, Certificate of Indian Status, Nexus or FAST card

    2. Canadian citizenship proof
      • Examples: Canadian passport, Canadian birth certificate, Certificate of Canadian citizenship, Canadian citizenship card, Certificate of Indian Status, Nexus or FAST card

    3. Qualifying address proof
      • Examples: driver's licence, Ontario photo card, recent property tax or utility bill, mortgage or rental agreement, recent income tax assessment, insurance policy, current record of employment

  • Running for Markham City Council? At least 25 Markham voters have to endorse your candidacy in writing. Record their original handrwitten endorsement signatures using the Endorsement of Nomination form [PDF].

  • If you want to be shown on the ballot by a name different from the one on your legal ID, you'll be asked for some form of proof that you're known by that name.
