    FMD: ONE OUTBREAK, MANY CONSEQUENCES

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease reaches far beyond animal health, disrupting trade and threatening livelihoods across the agricultural value chain. It also highlights the importance of strong, coordinated biosecurity systems. This conversation unpacks the economic and reputational impact of outbreaks, the role of government and industry in prevention and control, and what it will take to strengthen trust in South Africa’s animal health systems.
Key question: Can South Africa build a biosecurity system that prevents crisis, rather than simply reacting to it?
