  • The cadet will receive supervised training and experience from the Henrietta Township Fire Department for the following work-related tasks and activities, the training experience coordinated through the Henrietta Township Fire Department. This training experience is under the direct supervision of a site Coordinator and will include participation in/observation of activities relating to fire service operations and medical rescue operations as directed by the coordinator. At no time, will the Cadet be engaged in direct fire suppression activities or asked to complete any task/activity that would put the Cadet in harm's way. The paid-on call Cadet will earn the minimum wage established by the State of Michigan while in the cadet program.
  • Some responsibilities of program participants:

    1. The Henrietta Township Fire Department assumes the responsibility of providing the Cadet with the broadest occupational experience in keeping with the job activities listed above. This applies only to Cadets with signed agreements.
    2. The coordinator will arrange for related instruction, consultation, and advisory service to parties concerned with this training program and will meet with the Cadet on a monthly basis.
    3. The Henrietta Township fire department shall conform to all federal, state and local laws and regulations, including nondiscrimination against any applicant or explorer because of race, sex, color, national origin, or English-speaking ability.
    4. The Cadet will abide by the regulations and policies of the Henrietta Township Fire Department.

  • Purpose:

    The purpose of this document is to establish program requirements for the cadet program.

     

    Scope:

    This policy shall apply to all Cadets of the Henrietta Township Fire Department.

     

    Policy:

    This program is designed for qualified individuals of ages of 14-17. This position is intended to provide training and education in the modern practices and principles of firefighting, including but not limited to, extinguishing and preventing fires, providing emergency medical services, and operating and maintaining fire department equipment.
    The major focus is spent on training and studying emergency operational methods and techniques, as well as performing routine duties in the care and maintenance of the fire department property and equipment. Individuals in this program may only observe emergency operations.
    The cadet shall be capable of reading and understanding assigned materials as they relate to emergency medical services, firefighting and fire prevention. In addition, cadets shall be capable of performing the necessary tasks / skills associated with the required level of certification(s).

     

    Mission Statement: To encourage a firefighter Cadet Program for Henrietta Township Fire Department and the training and station duty assignments for the Cadet there for allowing the fire department to closely observe potential new firefighters.

     

    Cadet Firefighters must:

    1. Be at least 14 years of age when applying.
    2. Reside within the School districts of Northwest, East Jackson and Stockbridge. The Cadet Program is limited to 10 Cadets on roster.
    3. Must be enrolled in school and must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher and no truancies. Grades must be submitted each semester to allow continued participation in the program

  • 4. If the cadet misses school other than for a school function, the cadet shall not attend any fire department function for that day that they missed school. At no time, shall a cadet respond during the times of 6:00 am to 3:00 pm in a regularly scheduled school day and MAY NOT carry their pager with them while in school
  • 5. Pass oral interview.
  • 6. Have own transportation to and from department.
  • 7. Meet the requirements for the Cadet Program.
  • 8. Meet the required department attendance set forth by the officers of the Cadet Advisory Board.
  • 9. Meet requirements for mandatory Blood borne Pathogens Training.
  • 10. Maintain annual CPR Certification.
  • 11. Training on the forth Sunday of each month.
  • Cadet Firefighters may participate in the following activities but not limited to:

  • 1. If in high school, must not respond to an alarm between 2100 hours (9:00pm) and 0600 (6:00am), on school nights. If call sounds like it will fall within these time limits, do not respond. (We would like to have you here but school comes first.) Cadet will not wear his/her pager as school.
  • 2. Will not be allowed to be in hazardous situation or placed in personal jeopardy.
  • 3. Will not be allowed to respond to scene in personal vehicle. May ride to scene in department vehicle. However, will not take a place of a firefighter on the first responding unit. When responding to situation, cadet will obey ALL traffic Laws and speed limits pertaining to normal driving.
  • 4. Will not operate apparatus or power equipment unless authorized and supervised by fire department officer.
  • 5. If under the age of 18, must have written parental consent.
  • 6. If under the age of 18, must have working paper file at the department. Observe exterior firefighting activities, while under supervision.
  • 7. Will not be allowed to have lights or siren on personal vehicle.
  • 8. Will be evaluated by Fire Chief and Cadet Coordinator on a regular basis as to participation, performance and attitude. Can be dismissed if not meeting the above. The cadet will have the right to appeal to the Chief and Cadet Coordinator in writing, within 10 days of the incident or dismissal.
  • 9. Cadets are in Training up to 1 year and must be 16 years of age to respond to calls at which time the Cadet will be evaluated by Fire Chief and Cadet Coordinator for approval to respond to calls.
  • 10. When at the fire station the cadet will follow directions and orders of Cadet Coordinator or Officer. If place under supervision of regular firefighter, the same courtesy will be given.
  • 11. When on-call, cadet will be under direct supervision of Cadet Coordinator or Officer, and will do As directed.
  • 12. Cadet will remain at station after an alarm until apparatus is washed, in service and clean-up is completed, unless excused by Officer in charge or designate Fire Official.
  • 13. Fire Chief will issue all gear. Cadet will be issued protective gear that meets or exceeds State and Federal requirements.
  • 14. All gear will be kept at the station.
  • 15. Cadet will be expected to keep gear clean, Any damaged gear will be reported to Fire Chief or Cadet Coordinator immediately for repair (or his records), or replacement.
  • 16. All uniforms will be supplied by the Fire Department.
  • 17. Any cadet found to be under the influence of drugs, alcohol or receiving a “Minor in Possession” will be dismissed. This may be appealed to the Chief, in writing within 10 days of incident, at which time the designated Cadet Coordinator in charge of the cadet program will also be notified.
  • 18. Cadet will maintain a neat, clean, professional appearance when at the fire station and events. Remember you are representing Henrietta Township Fire Department and will encounter many different people. Look professional!
  • Disciplinary Procedures:

  • 1. First Incident: A verbal warning will be issued by the Fire Chief or Cadet Coordinator.
  • 2. Second Incident: If discipline is deemed necessary, a 30-day minimum suspension will be issued, At the time all gear will be surrendered to the fire Chief or Cadet Coordinator.
  • 3. Third Incident: If disciplinary action is deemed necessary, Cadet will be immediately dismissed, the cadet will surrender all department issued gear within 24 hours.
  • 4. At this time of dismissal, the former cadet will refrain form association him or herself with the Henrietta Fire Department. He or she will not convey to any other person that they are a representative, or associated with the Henrietta Township Fire Department in any capacity or give any indication that they are. If you represent yourself as such, charger may be filed on behalf of the Henrietta Township Fire Department.
  • Note: These rules may be changed with no prior noticed. Cadet will be notified to all changes.
  • Cadet Firefighters may not participate in the following activities but not limited to:

    1. Driving any fire apparatus.
    2. Fire suppression.
    3. Salvage and overhaul at the scene.
    4. Entering a confined space as defined in federal regulations.
    5. Responding to hazardous material fires, spills, or other events that may expose the cadet to hazardous material exceeding a threshold set in federal regulations.
    6. Performing Ice and water rescue.
    7. Any activity that involves the risk of falling six or more feet.
    8. At no time may the cadet be in the "Hot Zone"
    9. At no time, respond directly to an emergency scene.
  • Cadet Firefighter's uniform and Personal Protective Equipment:

  • The cadet's uniform and turnout gear shall be provided by the Chief if available and shall consist of but not limited to:

    4. Department Pull-Over (duty shirt)
    5. Badge
    6. Name Bar
  • Personal Protective Equipment if available:

    1. Blue helmet with "CADET" helmet crescents on both sides
    2. Turnout coat

    4. Boots
    5. Fire gloves
    6. Nomex Hood

    Becoming an active firefighter for Henrietta Township Fire Department,

    Once the Cadet becomes the age of 18, he/she must submit a letter of request to become a full member of the department to the Chief. The Chief will then bring the letter and the Cadet's department records to the next scheduled officer's meeting, where all records of the cadet will be reviewed and a decision will be made on the placement of the cadet to active status. It is the intent of the Fire Cadet Program to provide a safe, yet meaningful experience for the youth of our community. This program is to be viewed as an instructional and educational activity. Cadet programs are not intended to replace fire personnel, but rather to expose our youth to the occupation of firefighting. This policy is to be considered maximum parameters for operation. Henrietta Township Fire Department is free to restrict the participation of cadets within this policy. Safety of the cadets is the highest priority at all times. Any deviation of this policy shall be the responsibility of the Fire Chief and the Cadet Program Coordinators.
