About the Scholarship and General Rules
Three Black Family Weekend (BFW) scholarships are available for award in 2026.
DEADLINE: 9/25/26!
- One for an incoming freshman who has recently graduated from high school and is enrolled at San Jose State University (SJSU), taking at least 6 units.
- One for continuing SJSU students in good standing, taking at least 6 units.
- One for enrolled undergrad students who are parents with custody of their child/children, (taking at least 6 units.)
BFW scholarship winners must have achieved high levels of academia and volunteerism.
BFW scholarship winners must be enrolled at SJSU for the 2026-2027 school year.
Scholarship amounts:
- $1,000 for incoming enrolled SJSU freshman
- $1,000 for continuing SJSU student
- $1,000 for an undergrad SJSU student parent
Eligibility Criteria:
- 500-word essay based on achievement through Black family values
Good standing at SJSU
- Proof of enrollment at SJSU (6 units)
- Proof of community volunteerism (minimum 12 hours within the last year)
- Minimum SJSU cumulative GPA: 2.5 or a High School cumulative GPA of 2.5 for incoming freshmen having no college credits completed
Application Process:
- Submit an essay and other documentation in the form.
- The BFW committee will review documentation.
- Finalists will be invited to the BFW Homecoming Step Show.
- Winners will be announced at the BFW Step Show.
