Who is Pam Collins?
After years of painting signs for events and private businesses (customers ranging all the way from bars and clubs to funeral homes and auto shops), Pam Collins became the city's first Black sign painter in 1983. By the time she retired in 2013, she was described as "unofficially, the official artist of the city of New Orleans." This art form is fading as computer-printed signs become more readily available and artists retire, but the tradition lives on.
