Call to Artists: East Mesa Functional Art
  • Call to Artists: East Mesa Community Park Functional Art Pieces

  • Artists are invited to submit designs for a public art opportunity at the new East Mesa Park in Yuma. This project will feature a series of Acadia, Arch, and Sequoia benches, each transformed into a unique work of art that reflects creativity, community, and the spirit of the area.

East Mesa Park has been thoughtfully developed with sustainability at its core, incorporating environmentally responsible practices and materials throughout its design. In alignment with these values, the selection of these benches reflects a commitment to reducing environmental impact while enhancing public space through art. By integrating functional art pieces made from repurposed materials, the project supports the park’s broader vision of sustainability, innovation, and long-term community benefit.

The Acadia, Arch, and Sequoia benches used in this project were created by Noblewins, an organization founded with the intent to set the benchmark for public art. By repurposing a virtually indestructible waste stream, their work helps address a global environmental challenge while redefining how public art can shape shared spaces.

Selected artists will create a design and paint the benches that will become a permanent part of the park experience at East Mesa Park.

  • PROJECT OVERVIEW

The East Mesa Park Functional Art Pieces project aims to enhance the park through vibrant, artist-designed benches that serve as both functional seating and public art installations. A total of nine (9) unique designs will be selected for installation, ensuring each piece becomes a distinctive and engaging feature within the park.

As part of this initiative, a curated portfolio of selected artists and their bench designs will be developed. This portfolio will be shared with community members, businesses, and organizations that sponsor the benches, creating opportunities for meaningful collaboration. Sponsors may choose to work directly with artists to incorporate thoughtful design elements that reflect or highlight their business or organization, while still maintaining the artistic integrity of the piece.

    Acadia (5 benches)
Artists are encouraged to submit concepts that reflect the vibrant experiences families and children will enjoy at the park in Yuma. This area is intended to be an active, welcoming space where young visitors can explore, play, and create lasting memories.

    Sequoia (2 benches)
Artists are encouraged to develop design concepts that reflect patriotism and appreciation for those who have served, as these benches will be located near a veteran’s retirement home in Yuma. This presents an opportunity to create artwork that recognizes the dedication, sacrifice, and legacy of veterans in the community.

    Arch (2 benches)
Artists are invited to submit concepts arch benches, which will serve as sculptural and interactive focal points within the park. These larger-scale pieces provide an opportunity for immersive and visually impactful designs that may function as gathering spaces, and photo opportunities.
