Reading, spelling, and handwriting can finally make sense...
  • Reading, spelling, and handwriting can finally make sense...

A different approach for learners who haven't responded to typical instruction.
  • At the KY Language & Literacy Center, we work with many families who feel like they've tried everything, but something isn't clicking.

    The child is smart.

    They are trying.

You're doing everything the school has recommended at home.

But reading and spelling still feel harder than they should.

It's confusing- and honestly, exhausting (for kids and their parents).

  • In many cases, the issue isn’t effort.

    It’s the approach.

Most programs only teach memorization of sight words.

But many learners need to start with:
    ✔️ How words sound
✔️ How sounds connect to spelling
✔️ How meaning ties it all together

When that foundation is missing, progress feels slow—or inconsistent.

Kids who struggle with handwriting because the learn differently also benefit from a different approach because handwriting is SO MUCH MORE than a fine motor skill.

    They need to learn:

✔️ How to incorporate non-motor mental processes into handwriting (letter writing uses working memory, languages skills/ letter naming, planning skills, visual and sensory information, and the begins to activate brain power needed for reading)

✔️ How to organize the information their brain needs for letter writing

✔️ How to begin learning letters in a way that makes them feel successful then build to word writing as quickly as possible

✔️ How to write all letters accurately and efficiently without needing to spend a whole week on a single letter

  • What makes these programs different from others:

After registration, families will provide information about their learner.

    This allows sessions to be:
✔️ Better aligned to group needs
    ✔️ More targeted and efficient
✔️ More meaningful for each participant

In addition, parents receive guidance to better understand:

    • Why their learner is struggling
    • What actually helps
    • How to support progress at home

👉 This combination of instruction + parent understanding is what leads to real progress.

  • These are not a typical reading and handwriting classes.

These small group sessions focus on:

    ✔️ A speech-to-print (sounds-first) approach
✔️ Building connections between sounds, spelling, and meaning
✔️ Improving both reading AND writing (not just one)
✔️ Helping learners understand why words work—not just memorize them

The sight word class is a good fit for learners who:

    • Seem to “know things one day and forget the next”
    • Guess at words while reading
    • Struggle with spelling—even common words
    • Get frustrated with reading or writing

The handwriting class is a good fit for learners who:

    • Avoid tasks involving writing
    • Have messy handwriting that is difficult to read
    • Struggle to keep letters on the line or write letters with a consistent size
    • Need LOTS of extra time to write even if handwriting is easy to read

Your child isn’t just practicing—they’re building a system that makes reading and spelling easier over time.

  • ✏️ CLASS 1: Head-to-Hand® Writing Group

Build the foundation for reading and spelling through handwriting
    Tues/Wed/Thurs for 3 weeks | 9 classes total | 4:30–5:20 PM | Begins week of June 1

    Age: Elementary school

A language-based approach to handwriting that supports reading and spelling.
    Includes parent training materials.

    If your child:
    Struggles with handwriting
    Avoids writing tasks
Has difficulty forming letters or writing simple words

This more than just a handwriting class...

đź’ˇ What your child will learn
This program uses a language-based approach to handwriting, meaning students learn to:

    • Connect sounds to letters as they write
    • Build automatic letter formation
    • Strengthen the foundation needed for spelling and written expression

đźš« Why typical handwriting practice falls short
Practicing letters over and over does not fix the underlying issue.

When handwriting is disconnected from language, progress is slow—and often doesn’t transfer to reading or spelling.

    âś… What makes this different
Your child is learning a system that supports:

    • Writing
    • Spelling
    • Reading
    • All at the same time!

    👨‍👩‍👧 Parent Value
You’ll receive access to parent training materials that show you:

    • What your child is learning
    • How to reinforce it at home
    • How to avoid common mistakes that slow progress

    đź’° Tuition: $375

  • 📚 CLASS 2: Head-to-Hand® Sight Word Group
    Tues/Wed/Thurs for 3 weeks | 9 classes total | 5:30–6:20 PM | Begins week of June 1

    Age: Elementary school

Move beyond memorization and learn how words work.

    If your child:

    • Struggles with common “sight words”
    • Reads slowly or guesses
    • Spells words inconsistently
    • This group targets one of the biggest breakdowns in literacy.

đźš« The problem with traditional sight word instruction

Most programs teach kids to memorize words.

    But memorization:

    • Doesn’t stick
    • Doesn’t generalize
    • Doesn’t build real reading skills

đź’ˇ What your child will learn instead
Students are taught a sound-based system to:

    • Break down high-frequency words
    • Understand spelling patterns
    • Apply strategies to new words

    🎯 Personalized instruction
After registration, you’ll complete a short intake form identifying the words your child struggles with.

👉 These responses directly guide instruction in the group.

    👨‍👩‍👧 Parent Value
You’ll receive access to parent training materials that teach you:

    • How to support tricky words at home
    • What to do when your child gets stuck
    • How to find pattern in high-frequency sight words
    • How to move beyond memorization

    đź’° Tuition: $375

  • 🔬 CLASS 3: STEM Exploration Group
    Tues/Wed/Thurs for 1 week | 3 classes total | 5:30–6:20 PM | Week of June 22
