    Welcome to the MIMSA Survey 2026 

    The aim of this survey is to evaluate the usability of the Minimal Information Metadata Standard for Animals (MIMSA https://doi.org/10.37044/osf.io/ncrkm_v1) developed for cross-species use. Therefore, we want to identify and evaluate if the standard we have developed can be used for publishing metadata from animal research, including data across species. Participation is anonymous; data and results will be published openly with a permissive license in an anonymized form.

    It takes between 40 and 60 minutes to complete the survey, depending on how thoroughly you wish to familiarize yourself with the hierarchies.

    Current state of knowledge:
    When responding to the questions, please rely solely on your existing knowledge and do not search for information online.

    Browser and navigation:
    To ensure that all questions are displayed correctly, you must open the survey in an open-source browser, such as Firefox. Please use the "previous" button to navigate backwards, but not the "back" button of your browser. If you discontinue the survey, your results will not be saved.

    Withdrawing from participation:
    You can abort your participation at any time before submission. Neither participation, nor withdrawing from participation will result in negative consequences for you or for your work.

    Data protection:
    No questions are included to identify you as a person. Please do not add personally identifying answers in free text fields.

    3. Information on the processing of your data; purposes of processing; legal bases; security measures; storage period; information on the provision of data:

    If you participate in the survey, the University Medical Centre Rostock will collect non-personally identifiable data as follows for use in a subsequent analysis:

    • Country in which the participant currently works
    • Age of the participant
    • Participant’s current academic degree
    • Thematic focus of the participant’s research
    • The participant’s work outside of academia

    The analysis is conducted to adapt the metadata standard to research needs based on the results. In addition, the data collected as part of the survey may be used—exclusively in anonymized form—for scientific publications.

    The processing of data by the University Medical Centre Rostock is carried out to safeguard the University Medical Centre Rostock’s legitimate interests in evaluating the MIMSA standard, adapting the metadata standard to research needs, and using the collected evaluation data for scientific publications (in anonymized form) pursuant to Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR.

    Your data is collected on the Jotform platform. The data is stored on European servers in accordance with EU regulations. For more information on data protection on the Jotform platform, visit: https://www.jotform.com/privacy/ 

    The data you provide will be stored for the duration of the project and deleted no later than 6 months after the project ends (March 2029).

    Sofern Sie an der Umfrage teilnehmen, erhebt die Universitätsmedizin Rostock ohne Personenbezug Daten wie folgt, um sie für eine anschließende Auswertung zu verwenden:

    Explanatory notes for the following section

    The following section requests information on specific metadata at the various levels of the MIMSA hierarchy based on the ISA model (https://isa-tools.org/format/specification.html). The structure in MIMSA differs slightly from the ISA structure, as various units have been organized hierarchically different.

    The questions

    We will ask you questions about the usability of this framework when applied to your area of expertise, please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the MIMSA hierarchy in the graphic below. Each section of the workflow will be explained again before the relevant questions.

    It's helpful to think of an example of metadata recording (e.g. a project involving an experiment) and use this to answer the questions. Our focus is on determining whether the metadata term is required or not, and whether any metadata information is missing from the relevant section.

    Here is a highly simplified example of a pig project and how the corresponding metadata is captured using the MIMSA:
