• I have been asked to be a godparent/sponsor for the below listed person as he/she complete the Sacraments of Initiation in the Roman Catholic Church.

    Canon Law 874:

To be admitted to the role of godparent/sponsor, a person must be a Catholic who has been Confirmed in the Catholic Church, has already received the Sacrament of Holy Communion and leads a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.

  • Only one sponsor is requried, but both sponsors would need all of the below requirements.

  • Please read this document for the (click here) Responsibilities of a Confirmation Sponsor.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee gives this information regarding sponsors:

While it is allowed that a spouse or fiancé be a sponsor, it is not suggested or recommended. The reason it is not suggested is that the nature of the relationship between the sponsor and the candidate is that of a role model and an initiator into the community, not a relationship of equals, as it is between spouses.

May parents or step parents be confirmation sponsors?
No, but their role in the faith development of their children should not be underplayed or minimized.

  • In accepting this responsibility, I affirm that:*
  • All of the above information is correct and I agree with the responsibiliies of being a sponsor.
