Welcome to Rome, Georgia - a place of deep roots, shared history, and lasting connections across generations.
Greetings family and guests,
We are honored to invite you to the 2026 Shelton Family Reunion & A Call to Gather – A Shelton Heritage Preservation Experience, a gathering rooted in legacy, reconnection, and shared history.
Historical Overview of the Family
This gathering brings together descendants of Hardy and Mary Bearden Shelton, a formerly enslaved couple who, in 1874, established a settlement in and near what is now known as Possum Trot on the campus of Berry College. Together, they raised twelve known children—Laura, Lucy, Frances (Fannie), Aaron Hardy, Mary, Lula, Judy, William, Joel, Henri, Rhoda (Rhody), and Matilda—whose descendants carried their legacy forward across generations. From enslavement to landownership, and from Rome to communities across the country, their descendants have carried forward a legacy grounded in resilience, family, and community.
We also welcome members of our extended and interconnected families, including the Cathey, Finley, Spruce, Chubb, Freemantown, Hudgins, Ware, Selman, Adams, Montgomery, and others whose histories are deeply tied to Rome, Georgia, the surrounding communities, and the Shelton family of Possum Trot.
For more than 150 years, these allied and/or associated families have remained deeply interconnected with most having maintained lasting connections to the Shelton family—through intermarriage, shared history, andor ancestral ties to Flatwoods which now encompasses Berry College.
A Call to Gather - A Shelton Heritage Preservation Experience
As part of the 2026 Shelton Family Reunion weekend, the Saturday gathering on July 25, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., brings together family members alongside invited guests, collaborators, and others engaged in preservation, history, education, and descendant heritage initiatives. Similar in spirit to our 2022 Saturday gathering, this educational and inspirational portion of the weekend, supported by our family nonprofit partners, reflects the family’s longstanding commitment to preserving and honoring the legacy of Hardy and Mary Bearden Shelton and the interconnected communities tied to Possum Trot and beyond.
Intertwined Legacies: Possum Trot & Beyond
The theme of this gathering, Intertwined Legacies: Possum Trot & Beyond, reflects the lasting bonds that connect our families across time and place. Though generations were separated by migration and circumstance, they remained rooted in a shared origin and a collective memory of where they came from.
As our ancestors established lives and legacies in new communities, those legacies remained deeply connected—to one another and to Hardy and Mary Bearden Shelton, whose lives and choices shaped the foundation of this family. Their lasting values—community, healing, stewardship of the land, and care for one another—continue to guide and connect us today.
About This Gathering
At the heart of this weekend is family reconnection through reunion activities and the A Call to Gather - A Shelton Heritage Preservation Experience, an educational experience designed to deepen understanding of our shared journey—from enslavement to landownership, from separation to reconnection, and from memory to legacy.
The Shelton Heritage Preservation Experience represents the educational core of the weekend, featuring descendant-led experiences, historical interpretation, and preservation-focused programming along with special guest speakers. These efforts support the ongoing research, documentation, and sharing of our family’s history within the broader context of African American heritage and historic preservation.
About the Shelton Family Settlement at Possum Trot
The Shelton Family Settlement at Possum Trot (SFSPT), a host of this gathering, is a descendant-led collective, formally established in 2019 and rooted in collaborative preservation efforts that began in 2016. The collective brings together descendants and extended family members committed to honoring and preserving the legacy of Hardy and Mary Bearden Shelton and the broader network of interconnected families tied to this history.
The SFSPT Preservation Team, composed of descendant representatives from both family nonprofits and others from multiple family lines, engages in ongoing preservation and research efforts in collaboration with institutional and community partners, primarily Berry College and the work connected to the historic Possum Trot site. The collective previously hosted the 2022 reunion and is honored to support this gathering once again. SFSPT is also affiliated with the Cathey-Shelton Social Media (Facebook) descendant and affiliated families site.
SFSPT is not a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The educational components of this event are made possible through collaboration with two family-based nonprofit organizations, both 501(c)(3) entities, the Shelton Descendants Historical Society and the Shelton Heritage Society of GA & Historic Possum Trot (Shelton Heritage Society) which support the programmatic elements of the weekend, including the A Call to Gather Heritage Preservation Experience. Please note registration fees are not tax-deductible.
We encourage you to learn more about these organizations and their ongoing work in preservation, research, and community engagement below. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook at @1874sheltonfamilysettlment.
