Support a Corktown Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Study

Dear Neighbours,
Corktown is one of Toronto’s oldest neighbourhoods shaped by generations of communities whose stories are reflected in its streets and buildings
As the area continues to grow and change, there is an opportunity to ensure that this history is not lost, but thoughtfully carried forward.
This form collects expressions of support for initiating a Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Study in Corktown. This is the first step in a City-led process that includes research and community consultation before any decisions are made.
Our Victorian-era streetscapes serve as a visual anchor, that enhances the historic 'character' and 'feel' of our neighbourhood while providing a tangible link to its past.
Examples of Historic Buildings Supporting the Case for an HCD Study
- Little Trinity Church, 1844
- Inglenook Community School, 1887 (fmr: Sackville Public S.)
- St. Paul Church Basilica,1889 (second Church building)
- Riverside Church, 1903 (fmr: King St E. Methodist Church)
- Dominion Hotel (1890) and Brewery (1877-78)
- Smith Bros. Carriage & Wagon Works building, 1890s
While several prominent institutional and commercial buildings help illustrate Corktown’s historic significance, an HCD Study would primarily examine the neighbourhood’s broader historic character including its surviving Victorian-era houses, rowhouses, streetscapes, and built form.
A study would consider how these collective features contribute to Corktown’s historic identity, rather than focusing solely on individual landmark properties.
