• Clarence Okerlund Memorial Scholarship

  • The purpose of this Scholarship is to recognize and reward outstanding young men and women who are members of the Washington State Junior Holstein Association, and who have demonstrated leadership skills, academic ability, an interest in dairy cattle, and are pursuing higher education. The ambition for a career related to dairy-production agriculture, while not an unqualified requirement, is encouraged.

  • Qualifications:
    • Current U.S. citizens enrolled at a U.S. university, college or trade school.
    • Current Washington State Junior Holstein member
    • Dairy or agriculture related experiences and/or career aspirations.
  • The Washington State Holstein Association Board of Directors have approved a $1,000 Scholarship named in the honor of Clarence Okerlund, the legendary herdsman of Carnation Farms. Clarence was awarded the Klussendorf Award in 1966 while employed at Vaucluse Farm, a very well-established Jersey herd in Portsmouth in Rl owned by Diana Dodge Ryan. When Clarence arrived at Carnation Farms in 1968 he became the third on staff at Carnation to hold that honor, joining Al Hay and Duncan Mackenzie.
  • Clarence's daughter, Mary Okerlund will serve as one of the review panelists for the scholarship. Applicants are required to be Junior Holstein Members and are pursuing a degree or certificate in an Agriculture related field. Vocational and Trade School programs also qualify and are encouraged to apply. More details are available at www.washingtonholsteins.com. The scholarship will be awarded at the state show this year.
  • The new scholarship fund is hosted by the Washington State Holstein Association. This scholarship was negotiated with the current Secretary/ Treasurer as a term of employment. Duane Davidson will organize the selection committee. The Clarence Okerlund Memorial scholarship will be awarded at the Washington State Black & White Show.
