Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust

THE DELTA FARMLAND AND WILDLIFE TRUST, a non-profit, community based, charitable society, whose mission is to promote the preservation of farmland and associated wildlife habitat in the Fraser River delta through sustainable farming and land stewardship (referred hereinafter as the "DFWT").

The goal of the Hedgerow Stewardship Program is to increase wildlife habitat in farm landscapes. DFWT can support a limited number of hedgerows each year. Hedgerow applications are assessed based on wildlife value, with priority given to projects on commercial farms, as these have been identified as important sites for habitat enhancement. We will consider applications from all rural landowners but will give priority to projects on commercial farms.

DFWT works with farmers and landowners to establish hedgerows consisting of native trees and shrubs on farmland. The design of the hedgerow is done by DFWT in consultation with the farmer or landowner and the hedgerow is installed by a third-party landscape contractor. DFWT typically covers the cost of the plant materials, plant installation, and mulch. DFWT also helps with weeding and will replace dead plants as well as provide an annual cost-share payment for land removed from agricultural production for the first three years.

The farmer or landowner is responsible for site preparation, irrigation, and hedgerow maintenance including weeding and pruning (if desired). As the hedgerows are for the long-term benefit of wildlife habitat conservation, they are expected to remain in place for at least ten years.

We plan to expand the focus to other underrepresented groups in future. 

Your personal information is collected under section 26(c) and 26(e) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act for the purposes of evaluating applications and for the planning and evaluating of the S-CAP Ministry Program. The demographic information you provide is voluntary and will not be used to assess your eligibility for this program. Each individual understands the purposes of the collection, use, and disclosure of their demographic personal information. The information you provide will be shared with the federal government to fulfill the provincial obligations under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (S-CAP) bilateral agreement. It may be combined with other survey or administrative data sources and used for statistical, research and evaluation purposes. If any information is published, your responses will be combined with the responses of others so that you cannot be identified.
