    All students must choose an elective. Electives have limited capacity, so enrollment will be first come, first served. Please read through the descriptions below and then make your selection.

    Learning the basics of how music functions for films and critical listening of music from film excerpts.


    WORLD MUSIC WHIRLWIND
    with Miranda Dohrman

    A fast-paced exploration of musical instruments from around the world.


    TRANSCENDING THE PAGE
    with Jason Casanova

    Learning to go beyond the written music through lecture and discussion. Discuss musical phrasing and how to approach it. Compare approaches across various instruments.


    MUSIC THEORY
    with Leah Jacobmann

    Interested in getting a taste of what AP theory will look like in high school, or even theory 101 in college? In this theory elective, we will be diving into all our major and minor scales, intervals and even basic chord progressions! You'll learn to do simple aural and rhythmic dictation and how to really look at a sight reading excerpt. This class will give you a taste of what you can expect in those advanced classes, so get ready to dive in!


    CONDUCTING 101
    with Dr. Paul Bhasin

    Have you ever wondered what that person in front of your ensemble is doing with that baton? Well then, conducting 101 is perfect for you! We will learn how to properly hold a baton, how to read a conductor’s score, show the proper beat patterns, cue the sections, hold a fermata, and what to do with your non-baton hand. We will practice every day with classical and modern music to show how fun and important conducting is to your ensemble!

     

    JAZZ IMPROV
    with Dr. Brent Runnels

    This class will address the tools and elements used in jazz improvisation. Selected major jazz artists across varying styles will be studied to learn different approaches to Jazz improvisation. Optional performance as an ensemble during the closing concert on Saturday.
