Would you like to learn evidence-based instructional practices aligned with California’s Literacy Roadmap? Join this webinar, presented by literacy expert Joan Sedita, as she addresses one of the California Literacy Content Blocks: Integrated Reading and Writing.
This webinar will introduce practical, explicit instructional strategies for integrating reading, writing, and discussion. It will begin with a comparison of the components of Scarborough’s Reading Rope (2006) and Sedita’s Writing Rope (2019), highlighting the overlap in literacy skills and language processes.
The session then explores examples of how integrating reading and writing supports:
- phonics and advanced word study to strengthen both word reading and spelling
- sentence-level instruction to enhance comprehension of complex sentences and improve sentence elaboration in writing
- understanding of text structure at the paragraph and extended-text levels, promoting both comprehension of challenging texts and more effective organization in writing
- the use of writing tasks—such as note-taking, summarizing, and answering questions—to deepen text comprehension
- discussion as a tool to reinforce reading and writing and enhance content learning
Additionally, examples will demonstrate how the use of exemplar texts can improve students’ writing. Participants will leave with practices they can implement immediately.
This webinar is designed for classroom literacy teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators seeking to support the implementation of literacy practices aligned with California’s Literacy Roadmap.
