NCF Volunteer Opportunities!
We have various opportunities for you to contribute to our work. Click the option or options that most appeal to you. Some opportunities are specific to certain times of the year or days so please take note of those in the descriptions. We will contact you after we receive this form to confirm and to share information or details as needed.
Signature Event help at Milestone Bog? If interested click one or both and we will add you to the list of volunteers to contact for the June and/or the October event.
Race for Open Space -Rigorous trail running race in June. Volunteers can help with preparations and day of race activities.
Batacular Bike Race and Fall Festival. One day every October. Volunteers can help with the bike race and/or family friendly Fall Festival activities.
Field Work Help with an NCF staff person or in a small group. If interested click any of the choices and we will contact you.
Community Science American Eel project which takes place from February -May every year. Eel traps are checked weekly, and volunteers are invited to participate with the NCF scientists.
Horseshoe Crab Monitoring: Help NCF collect long-term monitoring data of spawning horseshoe crabs at Warren’s Landing. Volunteers will be trained by a wildlife technician to count them at the high tides surrounding new and full moons. Many slots are available at various times May - June – Some tides are middle of the night but tend to be the most productive for crabs! Volunteers will be paired with at least one or two other people to conduct counts.
Plant Propagation with Stacey Cooper, NCF’s Native Plant Propagation Manager. Help in the greenhouse, nursery, or with seed collection for planting on our properties. Weekdays only with Stacey and the timing varies with the seasons.
Independent Volunteer Opportunities. You can plan for your own pace. Click any of these choices and we will contact you.
Southern Pine Beetle Monitoring: If you love to walk trails in pitch pine forests, help NCF monitor for the presence of the invasive southern pine beetle. Learn how to identify when SPBs infest a tree in a short briefing with Danielle O'Dell and then commit to checking a particular area at least once every two weeks in the summer and fall. Your participation will augment the work that NCF staff conducts weekly. Report the details of any sightings to spb@nantucketconservation.org
Trail Stewardship and Reporting. Commit to walking the same NCF trail on your own independently about once a week or so. Choose your favorite area or we can suggest an area where more observations are helpful. Report issues to info@nanatucketconservation.org
Storm Damage Reporting. Check the trail you already frequent or another specific area that is susceptible to storm damage. Report if trees are down, wash over has occurred, or sand has drifted in areas that are vulnerable. Send significant observations to info@nantucketconservation.org.
Beach and Trail Clean Up. During the summer beach clean up on the weekend is especially helpful. With 100 miles of shoreline to maintain clean-up efforts are appreciated.
Nesting Shorebird Protection: Love beach nesting birds and want to help with their protection? We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help NCF staff on weekends where rare birds nest, making sure that dogs are on leashes, fencing is being respected, and to help visitors understand the importance of shorebird protection.
Community Service Hours for School. Type a brief description of what you plan to do. We recommend the beach and trail clean up option but let us know your preferences and we can see if there is a good match. Don't forget, you need to get permission from your parent / guardian.
If you need to document community service hours, working independently may be your best option. You are welcome to express interest in the June running race and the October bike race days as well. If you are under 18 you will need to get your parent or guardian's permission, then keep a log - any notebook or piece of paper will do - tracking the date and time that you help out. Add a short description of your work. Have your parent sign it verifying that your log is accurate. An NCF staff person can also sign it if you bring it to our office during business hours.
Which property, trail or beach do you want to help with? Or tell us generally what area of the island you enjoy and we will make a suggestion.
Write your preference for where you'd like to volunteer - either a specific area or a general island area and we can give you some suggestions.
