  • STUDY INFORMATION SHEET FOR
Young Adults’ Views About Research Participation: Barriers, Attitudes, and an Intervention
Sponsor: Indiana Wesleyan University Study Protocol Number:2356
You are invited to participate in a research study about how young adults view participation in research studies. You are being asked to participate because you are between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. Please read this form carefully and ask any questions you may have before deciding whether to participate.
This study is being conducted by Kirby Kirk, a doctoral student at Indiana Wesleyan University, under the supervision of Dr. Houston Logsdon.

    STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to better understand the barriers, attitudes, and apprehension that may influence whether young adults choose to participate in research studies. This study will also examine whether a brief educational intervention may improve participants’ understanding of research and attitudes toward participation.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE TAKING PART IN THE STUDY
If you agree to participate, you will be one of approximately 100 individuals participating in this research study.

    PROCEDURES FOR THE STUDY
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete the following activities:
    1. Complete a short online survey about your opinions, attitudes, and concerns related to research participation. This survey will take approximately 10–15 minutes.
    2. Watch a brief educational video explaining the purpose of research studies, participant rights, informed consent, and the importance of diverse participation in research. The video will take approximately 4–5 minutes.
    3. Complete a second short online survey after viewing the video. This survey will ask about your understanding of research participation and whether your attitudes changed after the intervention. This survey will take approximately 10 minutes.
Total participation time is expected to be approximately 25–30 minutes.

RISKS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY
The risks associated with participation in this study are minimal. Possible risks may include:
    • Mild discomfort when answering questions related to trust, fear, or concerns about research participation
    • Mild emotional discomfort when reflecting on personal experiences or beliefs
    • Possible loss of confidentiality, although reasonable steps will be taken to protect your information
You may skip any question you do not wish to answer. You may stop participating at any time without penalty.

BENEFITS OF TAKING PART IN THE STUDY
You may not receive direct personal benefit from participating in this study. However, possible benefits include:
    • Increased knowledge about how research studies work
    • Greater understanding of participant rights and protections
    • Opportunity to contribute to knowledge that may improve future research recruitment and engagement of young adults

    CONFIDENTIALITY
Reasonable efforts will be made to keep your information confidential. However, absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.
No personally identifying information such as your name will be included in published reports or presentations related to this study unless specifically authorized by you.
Study data will be stored securely using password-protected systems and only the researcher, dissertation chair, and authorized university personnel may have access to study records as needed.
Representatives of Indiana Wesleyan University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) or individuals responsible for monitoring research compliance may review study records.

    FUTURE RESEARCH
Information collected from this study may be used in future research studies or shared with other researchers after all identifying information has been removed. If this occurs, no additional consent will be requested.

    COSTS
There are no anticipated costs to you for participating in this study other than the time required to complete the surveys and educational video.

    INCENTIVES
Participants who complete the study may be entered into a voluntary raffle drawing for a e-gift card valued at $20.
Entering the raffle is optional and not required to participate.
