    Recycling Update:

There’s no doubt about it: we throw away far too much of what we buy. Many of the containers and packages we buy at the store can and should be recycled or reused. Here are a few tips on recycling from our readers.

Bags: whether you bring home paper or plastic bags, you can stuff lots of them into a drawer or a box. Plastic bags crush easily, so there will be lots of room after. Then you’ll have a ready supply to use as needed to store vegetables, wrap a sandwich, or cover a dish in the refrigerator. Use paper bags to line trash cans or to wrap packages.

Plastic Bottles: if you do any gardening, save plastic bleach bottles to make useful garden tools. Just cut out a section of the bottle, retaining the handle and you will have a sturdy scoop for moving soil, compost or seeds.

Cans and Jars: cans, especially those with plastic lids make great containers for pins, tacks, screws or nails. Baby food jars are ideal for paints or spices.

Using these helpful tips, we can reduce waste and save for a better tomorrow!

    To the Editor:

Much of the Northwest used to be covered by forests, but these forests will only be memories if we continue to cut down trees and sell them overseas. We should be planting trees not cutting them down; otherwise , we will have serious environmental problems.  These problems are already beginning. In forests where trees have been cut down, the soil has begun to wash away. This is called “erosion”, and it's just the beginning of many changes. Without trees to hold the soil, mud washes down the hillsides. It fills the streams downhill and causes bigger issues. For example, when mud fills the streams, it covers the salmon beds where salmon lay their eggs. This means many salmon never hatch. This is bad for people like me, who fish for a living and depend on a good salmon run every year. In conclusion, we all need to think about our part in the “big picture” because changing even one small part of a forest affects our entire world.

    Sincerely,

    Mary Nelson

    A Concerned Citizen and Fisher

    To the Editor:

I feel I must answer Mary Nelson’s letter last week. Not all logging companies cut down trees without planting new ones. It is true that loggers have different ideas about how quickly trees should be harvested. But the bigger issue is large corporations demanding more and more trees be cut down. The thing is lumbermen have a stake in the survival of trees. It would be silly for me to cut them all down without replanting them. I would cut myself right out of a jobe, and I have a family to take care of. Lumbermen need to be able to support their families. The “big picture” includes the large corporations and the consumers who buy so many wood and paper products. It is not only the lumbermen who are to blame.

    Sincerely,
    Joe Hamilton

    A Concerned Lumberman
