    Thank you for your interest in the Sophia Troetel First Responder Memorial Scholarship. The written portion of this application is designed to help us get to know you beyond a resume, GPA, or list of experiences. We want to better understand who you are as a person, how you think, what motivates you, and what you hope to contribute to our agency and community.

    The Sophia Troetel First Responder Memorial Scholarship supports future EMT students who share Sophia's passion for service, compassion, and leadership. Upon selection, awardee(s) will be enrolled in the University of Arizona's EMT certification course while concurrently working as a first responder and gaining valuable experience on shift with UAEMS. Upon competion of their NREMT certification, awardee(s) will gain admission into the subsequent probationary class. The scholarship is valued at $2000.00 and intended to cover the costs of the course.

  • The recipient must complete an initial EMT-B education course that is compliant with AZDHS and NREMT standards before the Spring 2026 semester begins at The University of Arizona. or Recipient must achieve NREMT certification as an EMT-B and Arizona state licensure as an EMCT.*
  • The recipient must complete their “first responder” and “probationary” periods with UAEMS. The first responder period is defined as the completion of one academic term while associated with UAEMS. Recipients will be required at minimum to attend eight trainings (defined as a two-hour UAEMS-hosted event with a focus on skills development), attend four classroom sessions, meet four times with their FTO (about once a month), attend Base Hospital and all specialty trainings, and attend one general meeting per month. The probationary period is defined in UAEMS Administrative Policy 303.*
  • If the recipient does not complete their “first responder” period with UAEMS or obtain their NREMT certification by the start date of the subsequent probationary period, the recipient will forfeit their scholarship and is responsible for returning the full value of the award ($2000.00) to UAEMS. The recipient will also forfeit admission into subsequent probationary period.*
  • UAEMS responds to all 9-1-1 calls, medical in nature, at the University of Arizona Main Campus. I acknowledge my understanding that there are many known and unknown dangers and/or risks associated with responding to 9-1-1 calls while working in an emergency medical service, including but not limited to exposure to infectious diseases (such as AIDS, Hepatitis, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID- 19) ), potentially hazardous materials, proximity to subjects detained by law enforcement, operations of emergency vehicles in potentially substandard weather conditions. All of which may lead to serious bodily harm or death.*

    If selected for an interview, please prepare for interviews to be held over Zoom the week of August 10th, 2026. 

    IMPORTANT: If you are not currently enrolled in EMD 147 for the Fall 2026 term, and you receive the First Responder scholarship, you will automatically be enrolled in EMD 147 for Fall 2026.
