Are you aware that it is NOT expected that an author pursuing the traditional publishing path invest their own money in any type of editing?
The facts: If you're able to get an agent, they will often work on the manuscript with you. Then, of course, if a publisher picks up your manuscript they will do their own series of edits.

It's true that more authors are hiring editors themselves before querying because they want to query a solid draft (or sometimes they've been in the querying trenches a while with no success and need the help).

Still, I like to be very clear about expectations so that you can choose what is best for you, especially when money is a potential issue.

Confirmation of Eligibility & Understanding

Please read each item below thoroughly and confirm that you understand and agree to each one. (Yes, unfortunately this is necessary.)
Only manuscripts which fit the types of projects edited by Kayleigh/In the Margins will be considered.
There is a maximum amount of funding available. Though efforts will be made to cover the full cost of the edit, depending on the length of your manuscript and what is available, you may only be offered partial assistance.
If you are offered assistance, you understand that it will be applied toward developmental services from In the Margins. You are not eligible to receive cash in any amount.
If your final manuscript exceeds 95,000 words or the word count equivalent to the financial amount available, you will be given the option of paying the difference or passing the assistance on to another author.
Your acceptance/signed contract will be required within 7 days of receiving an offer of assistance, or the offer may be rescinded and given to another author in need.
Your manuscript must be ready for editing by October 2026 or the offer may be rescinded and given to another author in need.
Financial assistance may not be applied to any existing contracts or to other services offered by In the Margins.
