Hügelkultur is a German word for a technique involving raised or mounded soil beds. In this class with PHA’s Director of Grounds & Facilities, Ian Jochems, attendees will learn how to use this horticultural practice for screening, soil amendment, topography, vegetable gardening, carbon sequestration, and disposal of annual yard waste. After a discussion, participants will walk around the campus grounds to see the Arboretum’s own hügelkultur piles, how they are progressing, and the benefits they bring to the Arboretum.
