Note from FLBS:
The Flathead Lake Biological Station requires attendees to sign a photo release form and a liability waiver form. These will be emailed to you ahead of time. Please fill them out before attending the workshop!
Weather Considerations
Please dress appropriately for all weather conditions. Classes will be moved to an indoor location at the Flathead Lake Biological Station if the weather is bad. Classes last 3 hours and can experience extreme weather changes, from cold to hot. Sunscreen and a sun hat are essential, as well as shoes that provide good support on rough terrain. Bug spray if needed.
Physical Ability
Please be honest about your physical capabilities. You must be able to carry a provided art backpack filled with art supplies, which will weigh just under 10 pounds (and more if you bring water/snacks/etc.), and walk 2-4 hundred yards over uneven terrain from the parking area. If you cannot stand for the full duration of the 3 hour class, you are welcome to bring a comfortable chair that you can comfortably carry along with your provided art backpack. There are some excellent packable outdoor chairs available on the market.
Pack It In, Pack It Out!
**Dispose of Waste and Trash Properly.**
We believe in leaving no trace. All waste, including trash and human or pet waste, must be disposed of properly. Please pack out what you pack in, including fruit peels and cores. Service animals only, please, no other pets. All service animals must be on a leash at all times. Use bathrooms whenever available. If not, toilet paper and waste bags will be provided to collect waste and toilet paper.. I will also have a bucket with a lid to keep waste contained until it can be disposed of properly. Please do
not dump it into trash receptacles at State sites; these are emptied infrequently, and doing so can cause them to become unusable. Additionally, please do not dump it in our latrine pits. There have been issues with people doing this, and it can cause a biohazard within the latrine and require the state to close it for an extended time. Don’t be shy about it; we all experience nature's call—it’s our responsibility to take care of it. I will supply hand sanitizer and baby wipes to clean your hands.
As a group, we will stick together and choose areas that can support our activities while spreading out together in one area as a group. This may result in less-than-perfect views for painting, but it's important to remember that this
class focuses on plein-air painting, which highlights an appreciation for the outdoors. When we stand on natural ground, we need to be cautious to avoid causing damage.
After class, I encourage you to use this knowledge to explore outdoor art-making independently. It's easier to enter a area individually without causing harm. I will point out suitable locations for plein-air painting that won’t interfere with other users or the environment. So when you venture out alone, you will know how to practice Leave No Trace Behind.
Enrollment and Attendance
Classes require a minimum of three students. If you are late, you are holding up the entire class. The place where we choose to hold the class may or may not be visible from the parking lot. The class will start promptly.
