PASTORAL SUPPORT ROLE CONGREGATIONAL SURVEY

In determining the need for and potentially seeking a pastoral support role for our church, it is imperative that we seek to answer: At this time and place where God has called us…
- What should be the primary responsibilities of this role?
- What competencies will be most important for this role?
- What are the characteristics that would be most desirable in this role?
There is not an expectation that the next individual in the pastor support role should continue having the same responsibilities nor are there any assumptions about what the person should do and be. Therefore, each member is asked to prayerfully complete this survey regarding potential responsibilities and competencies for the role. We also welcome and value your comments.
RESPONSIBILITIES

For each of the following position responsibilities rank the importance of that responsibility for the pastoral support role at this time in the life of Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church.

Study, prepare, and preach sermons that are biblically and theologically grounded and address the current context of the congregation and its members.
Prepare and counsel participants for baptism and/or church membership.
Work with elders for administration of communion both in worship setting and in-home visits.
Teaching of confirmation classes or membership classes for those considering becoming active members of the congregation through profession of faith.
Coordination and/or teaching of adult Christian education offering and events.
Support and/or supervision of Christian education ministries for children & youth.
Pastoral visitation of the sick (hospital; rehabilitation) and their families.
Pastoral visitation of shut-ins (home; nursing home).
Pastoral care of other members in need of various kinds.
Officiating at funerals, along with preparatory & follow-up visits with the family.
Officiate weddings, along with providing preparatory premarital counseling.
Serve actively in the local clergy association, ecumenical groups, and community service organizations on behalf of the congregation.
Serve actively within Redstone Presbytery in both committees and presbytery meetings.
Coordinate and/or supervise activities of volunteers providing leadership in congregational ministries.
Be available by appointment for nurturing discipleship and spiritual mentoring of members and participants of the congregation.
Work with, and resource, individual committees and ministries of the Session.
Follow up contact and visitation of visitors to the worship services.
Actively support and promote missions, both local and international within the congregation.
Provide administrative leadership and supervision of other church staff and programs.
Work regularly in promotion and development of stewardship growth within the congregation.
Equip and encourage members of the congregation to develop and use their gifts for ministry.
Provide officer training for ruling elders and deacons for those newly elected to serve.
Attend session, deacon and/or committee meetings in ex-officio capacity.
Provide moderatorial leadership for session and congregational meetings.
