    Position: Crew Member for Understory

    About the Program:  

    The Chattanooga Tree Project is a tree-planting initiative rooted at green|spaces in the heart of Chattanooga, Tennessee focused on supporting the health and sustainability of our community and environment. With the Understory Work Crew, we grow trees in order to grow communities through engagement and volunteerism. Understory is dedicated to growing stronger, more resilient communities alongside everyday citizens, volunteers, and strategic partners. We believe in the power of trees to transform lives and create a healthy future for generations to come.

    Participants in this 12-month paid program will receive professional job skills and personal development training through structured field and classroom sessions. This experience will help serve as a pathway to careers in tree care, urban forestry,  or environmental preservation.

    Key Responsibilities:  

    • Assist in the planting and maintenance of trees through the Chattanooga region.
    • Engage with residents about planting trees in their community.
    • Lead volunteers in tree planting events.
    • Learn and apply safe tool use, pruning techniques, and other arborist skills.
    • Participate in structured training sessions to develop professional and personal skills.
    • Maintain a positive attitude towards environmental preservation and community activism.

    Qualifications:  

    • No prior tree care or related experience required; training will be provided.
    • Willingness to adapt and contribute to a new working program by giving and receiving feedback.
    • Engage in physical, outdoor work, in all weather conditions. (Nearly all aspects of this position occur outdoors)
    • Interest in environmental conservation and learning the benefits of trees in city neighborhoods

    Benefits:

    • Full-Time paid training with competitive hourly wage (Seasonal Employment 12 months)

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Age 18-30 (exceptions allowed) 
    • Commitment to attend the program for a full 12 months

    Compensation:

    • Base Pay: $18 per hour
    • Paid Holidays Off
