  • We are very happy to announce that we host a workshop on feminist aesthetics with the amazing theater facilitator Mariana Villani in Vienna!

Mariana Villani is an Argentinian practitioner of Theatre of the Oppressed and Feminist “Teatro de las oprimidas“. She is a founding member of the International Ma(g)dalena Network and the Latin American Network of Theatre of the Oppressed. She accompanies artistic and pedagogical processes for groups across Latin America and Europe.

The workshop “Feminist Aesthetics for Political Poetics” delves into the challenges and discoveries made during practical work with theater groups, artists and activists from Latin America, Europe and Africa. Our objective in the workshop is to re-frame and re-think perceptions of oppression and the responsibility to initiate change. The used theater methods are focused on structural standpoints and intersectional perspectives, while avoiding the pitfalls of individualizing the issue or assigning blame to the people affected by it. We dive into the following questions:

    - How can theatre create spaces where reality is not only analysed, but collectively transformed through shared processes of change?

    - Which images, sounds and movements emerge when we collectively imagine other possible worlds?

    - How can Feminist Aesthetics help us develop dramaturgies that foster transformative dialogues?

The theater workshop is based on a repertoire of original exercises, games, and techniques, using feminist aesthetics from an anti-racist, decolonial, and community perspective. We employ material such as drawings, poetry, media/newspapers, sound and instruments. The workshop includes methods of the Magdalena Laboratory, exploring taboos and highly sensitive social topics, using art to visualise concrete pathways to fight injustice and to transform reality.

The workshop will end with a public performance – a theatrical horizontal dialogue with the audience. In collective interaction, each individual, drawing from their unique social standing and position, collaborates with others to collectively improvise alternatives to the problem being portrayed on stage.

This workshop is open to all TINFA* (trans, inter, non-binary, female, agender) people interested in aesthetic tools. We especially invite TINFA* people from marginalized groups (queer, migrant, BiPoc, persons with disabilities, people with children and other care responsibilities, economic difficult situations, etc.) to join the workshop!
