Led by Roshi Aba
This one-day intensive workshop introduces participants to the expressive possibilities of gum oil printing — a tactile photographic process that combines photographic exposure with manual oil-based image development. Designed for photographers and visual artists interested in material-based image making, the workshop focuses on transforming a single photographic image into a handcrafted print through layering, texture, pigment, and controlled manipulation of the print surface. Throughout the day, participants will explore the relationship between photographic structure and painterly intervention while learning the technical foundations of preparing, exposing, and developing gum oil prints by hand. The workshop combines practical demonstrations, guided studio production, and critical discussion surrounding image interpretation, surface aesthetics, and the physical qualities of alternative photographic printing.
Upon registration, each participant is asked to submit one selected photograph to be used during the workshop process. The image should have strong tonal structure and be suitable for monochrome interpretation.
Registration for this workshop closes on June 16.
