  • The detailed call for proposal is available (in English) on Game in Lab's website: www.game-in-lab.org and can be downloaded here. 

    Applications are open until September 25, 2026 at noon (GMT+2).

    Applications should be written in English.

    After you hit the "submit" button, you will receive an emain with a link that will allow you to update the form later, should you choose to, until the set deadline.

  • Please provide a brief description of the project in the space below, and attach a more detailed version as a PDF document.

    The detailed project description (PDF) should include the following:

    • Topic: What is the subject of the project, and how does it relate to board games?
    • Main objectives: What are the goals of the project? What problems does it aim to address? Please highlight its originality, scientific relevance, and expected impact.
    • Methodology: Describe the research methods you intend to use and include relevant bibliographic references.
    • Research timeline: Provide both a high-level overview and a detailed schedule. Projects are expected to last up to 24 months.
    • Outreach and dissemination plan: If applicable, describe how you plan to share and promote your research with the general public.
    • Budget breakdown: Provide a detailed allocation of the project’s budget. Each project may apply for a maximum grant of €20,000. The number of projects funded will depend on the amounts allocated to each.
    • Alignment with Game in Lab’s objectives: Explain how your project supports Game in Lab’s goals, including advancing scientific research on board games, making research accessible to the public, and fostering collaborations with professionals.
    • Main deliverables: List the expected outcomes or outputs of the project.
    • Risk assessment: Identify the main risks that could affect the project and briefly describe how you plan to mitigate them. This may include methodological, operational, administrative, ethical, or partnership-related risks.
  • IMPACT PLAN

  • Maximum 500 words. Please upload the statement as a PDF document in the "attachments" section below.

    In this section, please describe the potential benefit of your research to people and communities beyond academia. We use "impact" to mean the demonstrable contribution research makes to society, culture, the economy, or policy.

    Please address the following:

    • Who might benefit from your research, and why? Identify the non-academic individuals, groups, or organisations who are likely to be interested in or to benefit from your findings, directly or indirectly. Be as specific as you can.
    • How might they benefit? Describe what difference your research could make to these groups. What might they be able to do, understand, or decide differently as a result of your work?

    What will you do to support this? Outline the steps you plan to take to give potential beneficiaries the opportunity to engage with your research. This might include partnerships, events, public outputs, practitioner networks, or other forms of knowledge exchange. Where you have already established connections with non-academic partners, please describe these.

  • Your application should include the following attachments:

    • A detailed description of the project
    • The project leader’s CV, including a list of relevant publications
    • CVs and role descriptions of other team members
    • An estimated budget, including any administrative fees charged by the home institution (if applicable)
    • An Impact Plan (see description above)
    • A bibliography
    • A ludography (a selection of games used in the study, with justification for their inclusion)
    • Two letters of commitment from the home institution:
      • One from the Head of the research department or institute to which the project leader is affiliated
      • One from the administrative department responsible for managing the project’s budget
    • Any administrative documents such as permits, ethics approvals, or authorizations required for fieldwork, archival research, or access to collections
    • In the case of co-funding: letters of support from the relevant institutions
    • Any additional information deemed necessary
