This manual is designed as a GUIDE for both parents and students to give specific details concerning all aspects of the music programs at Summit. It is a guide to ensure everyone involved has a better understanding of expectations of the program. At any time before, during, and/or after school, the directors reserve the right to make changes verbally and/or in writing without formal notification. Every effort will be made to include all aspects of the program. The reality is, things may or may not change, sometimes without prior warning. Non-Discrimination Notification (for student handbooks and activity flyers)

The Governing Board desires to provide a safe school environment that allows all students equal access and opportunities in the district's academic and other educational support programs, services, and activities. The Board prohibits, at any district school or school activity, unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying of any student based on the student's actual race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age, religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identification, or gender expression; the perception of one or more of such characteristics; or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics Prohibited discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or bullying includes physical, verbal, nonverbal, or written conduct based on one of the categories listed above that is so severe and pervasive that it affects a student's ability to participate in or benefit from an educational program or activity; creates an intimidating, threatening, hostile, or offensive educational environment; has the effect of substantially or unreasonably interfering with a student's academic performance; or otherwise adversely affects a student's educational opportunities. The Board also prohibits any form of retaliation against any student who files a complaint or report regarding an incident of discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or bullying. Board Policy 5145.7 protects students at all grade levels. E.C. 200-262.4 Prohibition of discrimination The Board prohibits intimidation or harassment of any student by any employee, student or other person in the district. Staff shall be alert and immediately responsive to student conduct, which may interfere with another student's ability to participate in or benefit from school services, activities or privileges. California Code of Regulations, Title 5 Section 4600 through 4645.3(a Free inquiry and exchange of ideas are essential parts of a democratic education. The Governing Board respects students' rights to express ideas and opinions, take stands, and support causes, whether controversial or not. Student liberties of expression shall be limited on a nondiscriminatory basis only as allowed by law in order to maintain an orderly school environment and to protect the rights, health and safety of all members of the school community. Prior restraint shall be exercised only when student expression violates the limitations set forth in this policy. In keeping with the California Education Code, the Board prohibits any expression or materials which are obscene, libelous or slanderous according to current legal definitions. The Board, likewise, prohibits expression or materials, which demonstrably incite students to commit unlawful acts on school premises, violate school rules, or substantially disrupt the school's orderly operation. Printed materials or petitions shall be distributed only at reasonable times and places in reasonable ways: 1. Before school begins, during lunchtime, and after dismissal. 2.In locations that do not obstruct the normal flow or traffic within school or at entrances. 3. Without due noise, and without any use of coercion. 4. Materials are not left undistributed or stacked for pickup while unattended at any place in the school or on school grounds.

SkyHawks Marching Regiment

Director of Instrumental Music: James C. Sharp

The SkyHawks Music Program includes every student in the band program. When combined with the Color Guard, the entire group is known as the "SkyHawks Marching Regiment". The SkyHawks Marching Regiment has a long history of great traditions, pride and excellence. The marching band performs at all SHS pep rallies, varsity football games, and marching contests. Membership in the Marching Band is required of all band students. In addition to the regular scheduled class, the Marching Band rehearses daily during 4th period and after school on different days depending on the section in the band room. Marching Band students are eligible to receive a physical education credit for membership in Marching Band. (Maximum of 2 years of PE credits)

Color Guard/Winter Guard

Guard Caption Head: Giovani Ayon

The color guard is the primary visual component of the SkyHawks Marching Regiment. Winter Guard is offered during second semester only. Membership in this organization is open to all students at Summit High School. Emphasis is placed upon the development of movement and visual artistry through the use of equipment, props and dance techniques. The Color Guard rehearses/performs in conjunction with all Marching Band related activities. Students will be required to attend all marching band rehearsals and additional separate rehearsals set by the directors. Winter Guard is the spring-semester version of Color Guard. Winter Guard rehearses and performs independently of the marching band. Winter Guard membership is by audition in the fall in late November and held in the Spring. Students and parents should refer to the band handbook as the primary governing document for this organization. Due to the group's unique nature, however, the director may provide more specific information and expectations in the form of separate handbook addendums. Please note Winter Guard is during the 2nd semester and also has an additional pack associated with this program. More information will be available towards the end of the fall season.

Percussion

Director: James C. Sharp

Percussion Caption Head: Robert Bowen

The heartbeat of the program is the percussion section.  The program, led by Robert Bowen, is made up of various percussion instruments. In the fall, the percussion is part of the SkyHawks Marching Regiment.  Both sections, Battery, and Front Ensemble, keep the rhythm and pace of the music.  In the Spring, the Indoor percussion  season begins,  The percussion section performs separate from the SkyHawks Marching Regiment on their own inside gyms..

Concert Band/Wind Ensemble

Students are placed in concert band or wind ensemble according to their playing ability, attitude, participation, classification, and instrumentation needs. Students may move from band to orchestra as deemed necessary or appropriate. The concert bands provide for a wide range of playing abilities and time commitments. With team teaching, students will have the opportunity to experience full band, sectionals, and individual attention. Additional rehearsal expectations and membership requirements are noted in the following descriptors.

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble will meet in the spring semester at SHS after school. The director of the Jazz Band will set the rehearsal schedule. Membership in the Jazz Ensemble is by audition and approval of the director only. A student must be a member of one of the performing ensembles at Summit High School in order to be a member of the Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Ensemble may compete/perform at Solo & Ensemble and a spring Jazz Festival as well as other civic events.

A yearly band calendar is provided for use in planning your family schedule for the upcoming school year found on the  App under Events tab. Each band student is important to the success of our many activities. We must be able to count on 100% attendance at these rehearsals and performances. If a family emergency occurs unexpectedly, PARENTS, please email or call the director. Occasionally, there may be family commitments (weddings, graduations, etc; in which case, we will try to be flexible and work with you on an individual basis. This must be discussed in detail well in advance (a month or more! Student job commitments and "select sports" are not reasons for an excused absence from band performances or rehearsals! Many band students work and participate in "select sports" and participate successfully in band. We suggest these students take a copy of the band calendar to his/her employer and/or coach and clear all band performances and rehearsals. Most employers are very understanding and are flexible if they know of band commitments well in advance, and if they understand band performances are a required and vital part of the course work (We are glad to talk to employers to validate student commitments If a band student has an unexcused absence from a performance/rehearsal, they are subject to removal from the band program. In addition, it should be clearly understood communicating an absence does NOT automatically mean it is excused. Student's attendance is part of their overall grade

• 10 points per class period
• 50 points each for Wednesday and Friday rehearsal
• 100 points for Saturday rehearsal
• 200 for each performance including football games and competitions

In band rehearsals, we not only deal with a creative process, but with considerably more students at one time than do other classroom teachers. Because of this, it is imperative band students be organized and prepared for every rehearsal. When an individual is not able to perform during a rehearsal, it affects the GROUP as well as the individual. Specifically, students are expected to be present and on time with their instrument in proper working condition along with any additional accessories as deemed necessary and appropriate by the director. The creative process in which we are involved cannot take place unless there is a quiet, attentive atmosphere in the classroom. Students who do not live up to the high rehearsal expectations of the SkyHawks Marching Regiment will be counseled and if necessary, reassigned or removed from the band program completely.

CLOTHING

T-Shirts are strongly recommended to be light-colored and lightweight. Black gym shorts are also recommended. Make sure you are able to stretch and work out in all of your clothes NO JEANS!!!

NOTE: clothing must follow the school dress code. You will ask you to change if any inappropriate clothing is worn. The weather can be unpredictable, so prepare accordingly. ONLY tennis shoes are acceptable for on-field rehearsals.

EQUIPMENT

• You will need the following for ALL rehearsals:
• Your instrument Music (Warm-Ups, Show music, etc.)
• Your dot sheet in lanyard and a pencil (required)
• WATER!!!.  water jugs with ice are ideal to stay cool &  hydrated.
• Extra reeds, valve oil, etc. (anything needed to keep your instrument playable throughout rehearsal)
• Hats or other head-covers are required for all outdoor rehearsals Section leaders may require you to have other various equipment. 
• Other Essential
  • Sunscreen (you will want to reapply on each break)
  • Bug spray
  • Sunglasses

THINGS TO REMEMBER

• Cell phones may be brought to band camp. However, they will not be permitted during ANY rehearsal throughout the entire season. The use of cell phones at band camp should be limited to evenings and free time.
• If you require a time keeping device during rehearsal, please use a watch. Honestly though, rehearsal goes by a lot faster if one is not constantly looking at the time.
• If you ever have any questions during camp, ask leadership, staff or a Drum Major. Band camp is our time to learn and work hard. We do have a lot of fun, though learning discipline is a big part of being at camp.
• Respect is to be shown in full when the section leaders, staff or clinicians are teaching. Please do not talk when anyone on the leadership team or staff is talking.
• Remember if a member of the leadership or the staff tells you to do something differently, they are just trying to improve the whole band, not embarrass you in any way or make you feel bad. 

Overall, band is about having fun, making new friends, and having a place to belong in this crazy place we call high school. If you ever have any issues with any part of the band program, please let a person on leadership know and we will try to work it out. We would rather work out issues than have anyone quit. All music organizations adhere to the eligibility rules and regulations as stated by FUSD. The Summit Staff will enforce all eligibility rules and regulations. Students who are ineligible will continue to rehearse during his/her band class, before and after school, and participate in curricular performances to earn his/her band grade. Ineligible students may not travel with the band or participate in extracurricular performances.

• No student may compete, perform or represent Summit who has not passed four (4) or more classes of new work during the previous grading period with a 2.0 grade point average
• No student may compete, perform or represent Summit who has reached his/her nineteenth (19) birthday prior to the first day of September of the school year in which he/she wishes to compete.
• Students who wish to compete, perform or represent Summit must adhere to the grooming standards required by the director/instructor involved.
• Students who wish to compete in marching band, perform or represent Summit must have medical insurance coverage (state law)
• Students may access the necessary paperwork for academic eligibility by visiting the school website, summithigh. net, click on athletics, and print a copy of the eligibility packet.
• Parents and students may find up-to-date schedules for practices and performances by visiting the program website,  App
• All other rules established by the FUSD and Summit High School apply.

Note: Fontana Unified School District Board of Education Policies supersede any other guidelines. Our district policy states a student must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.0. Maintaining eligibility is of the utmost importance. If a student falls below 2.00, he/she will be ineligible to receive any awards or continue to participate.

An example of a curricular performance would be a spring concert and an extracurricular performance would be a football halftime or any type of contest. Students should always check on an event if there is a question of their participation. Be advised excessive absences from school may also result in a student being declared ineligible. The band staff and Summit High Schoolstaff work hard to assist and encourage band students to perform up to their potential in all classes. Since both Marching Band and Concert Band are group activities, each individual band student plays an important part in the success of the group. The band staff consults both with teachers and students for strategies for improving individual student performance. Obviously, we cannot be successful as a band unless our students are successfully passing all classes. Students who are ineligible for 2 consecutive eligibility checkpoints will be placed on probation. If they do not become eligible for the following eligibility checkpoint, they may be removed from the band program. This will allow the student to focus on passing academic classes during the next semester. Students wishing to be considered for reinstatement in band following this probation must bring documentation (report card) to a band director proving academic success during each grading period of the succeeding semester for all classes. Academic success is defined as passing all subjects during every grading period. Students must also maintain a clean discipline record with the school. This process is set up to help the academic success of the individual student. Please consult the enclosed eligibility calendar for specific dates and grading periods.

Students belong to the program because they want to, not because they have to. Grades, therefore, tend to be higher than the norm. Grading is based upon participation and performance. Band students receive a grade for each performance attended (i.e., football games, concerts, competitions, etc Students will receive additional grades based on daily participation, sectionals, playing & written tests, etc. Students must have equipment in good working order and be present at all required rehearsals and performances for their participation grade. If these expectations are not met, the participation grade will be affected.

Students are welcome to use the band practice rooms for practice either before or after school. Sometimes, however, the number of available places is limited, since both sectional and private lessons take place before and after school. Students must ask their friends who are not in the band to wait for them outside. Lockers with locks are provided to assist students and parents in protecting their investment. We stress all band students to be responsible and keep their equipment locked up in their lockers at all times.

Fontana Unified School District provides school musical instruments but are limited. Each student using a school instrument must have a signed instrument User Agreement on file before the instrument is check out. The User Agreement is available on request. These instruments are quite costly. These instruments are sent to the repair shop and reconditioned during the summer. Any damage or normal adjustment during the year is the responsibility of the band student who has signed for the instrument. We expect the instrument to be returned in the same condition as when issued. Dings, dents, and other damage will be repaired at the student's expense. If an instrument isstolen while checking out to a student, it is the student's responsibility to replace the instrument via its monetary value. Many parents carry an insurance rider to cover a checked-out school instrument.

It is a privilege to wear the Summit High School Band uniform. Make sure you have all parts of the uniform at each performance. Keep your uniform professionally clean and pressed! If your uniform does not meet the high standard expected in the SkyHawks Marching Regiment, you are subjectto being removed from a performance or not traveling with the band. This uniform is a symbol of pride and will be worn accordingly. You must wear all of the uniform or none of the uniform unless the director states otherwise! The undershirt and shorts are a part of the marching uniform and are to be worn underneath the uniform at all times. Band uniforms are not to be worn at eating establishments, after games or performances, or at social functions. Eating and drinking soft drinks should be done before you put on or after you remove your uniform. The program will dry-clean uniforms once a year.

Here are some dos and don'ts which will help you and your uniform look great at all times:

• DO: remember your black undergarments (White for Drum Majors), black or white socks (For Drum Majors Only), and marching shoes each time you wear your uniform.
• DO: transport your uniform in a garment bag and your hat in your hatbox. Every time
• DO: take extra time and care when hanging up your uniform. Pants hang folded on the crease, not the seat.
• DO: remember to bring your instrument in spite of your excitement over your uniform
• DO NOT: remove any material from the uniform if alterations are necessary.
• DO NOT: store your uniform in the garment bag immediately after wearing it. This will cause it to mildew and get a “funny” smell. This odor will never leave the garment. EVER
• DO NOT: attempt to wash and/or dry your uniform at home. The program will dry-clean your uniform 2 times per year, once in the middle of the season and then again at the end of the season.  If your uniform needs to be cleaned before you may ask the director if you can have it cleaned at your expense. Your uniform and the people you sit by will thank you.

UNIFORM ACCESSORIES
The SkyHawks Marching Regiment uniform (tunic & bibbers only) is provided by the school.

Band students will need to provide:

• One pair of black marching shoes. Shoe fitting information will be provided during registration at the beginning of summer band camp. Shoes are $50 a pair. (Tennis shoes or dress shoes are not acceptable).  Check with director for used shoes in good condition from last year.  These shoes are free of charge.
• Black uniform undergarments. Band shirts and shorts are a part of the marching uniform. It is to be worn at all times when the uniform is to be worn.
• Two pair of full-length black socks. (no skin showing)
• A sturdy hanger should be used especially after dry cleaning to insure proper storage.
• Students may provide their own sturdy garment bag. Plastic garbage bags or bags from the cleaners are not acceptable.

SHOW SHIRT/WARM-UPS
All band students can purchase the SkyHawks Marching Regiment Shirt & Warm-Ups at the beginning of each school year. The warm-ups are the same every year and do not need to be purchased every year.  The show shirt is to be worn tucked at all times during pep rallies, trip activities, and other performances where less formal attire is appropriate. The black band wears, the black shirt and shorts are to be worn under the uniform and the show shirt after performances with warm-ups (weather permitting).  Shirts and Warm-ups can be purchased from the Boosters.  Complete the form at the end. Payment must be received before the order can be placed.

FOOTBALL GAME POLICY
Normal school policies dictate band students ride to and return from all off-campus performances as a group using transportation provided by the district. On rare occasions, an emergency or conflict with other school sponsored events may necessitate parents to provide transportation to or from an off-campus performance. In such a situation, a note signed by the parent should be presented to the director and one of the directors must physically see the parent take the student. This must be arranged in advance. Football games serve two primary purposes for the Summit Band:

• Opportunities to provide “unparalleled” support for our team through the use of music, cheers and chants.
• To provide a quality, entertaining halftime performance as partial fulfillment of the marching band class.

Students are expected and encouraged to show their spirit for the team and fellow bandsmen. After all, football games are great fun! Students should, however, remember to represent their school, teachers, classmates, parents and themselves in a positive manner at all times. Here are some specific guidelines.

• Each person must have and be responsible for his/her own equipment at all times.
• Be in full uniform, properly worn at all times. Caps, headbands, jewelry and piercings are not permitted (ladies may wear a single stud in each ear only). Facial piercing of any kind is prohibited.
• Student’s hair, including facial hair, must be clean, groomed and by the nature of the style does not tend to create a distraction.
• Hair must be a natural color or naturally tinted in a balanced manner which does not detract from the uniform. Hair must be worn inside the hat during performance. This applies to both girls and boys.
• Sit in your assigned seat/area and do not move about the band during the game.
• Sit when everyone sits and stand when everyone stands. Remember: we’re a team!
• Watch the game and your Drum Majors. Be alert and ready at all times.
• Play each and every time the band plays and play your best each time.
• Only band personnel and official chaperones are allowed in the band area. Parents, siblings and friends may not sit with you. On occasion, alumni may visit with the director’s permission.
• Food and gum are not permitted in the stands. Parents should not attempt to deliver food or drink at any time. The staff will arrange for all food and drinks at appropriate times.
• Restroom breaks are allowed during the 3rd quarter.  TWO (2) students at a time.
• Radios jam boxes, iPods or similar devices are not permitted at any time. Cell phones ARE permitted provided they remain in the “OFF” position during the game and used ONLY to contact parents afterward. The above items may be confiscated and returned to the parents at any time.
• Unsportsmanlike comments or conduct will not be tolerated at any time and may result in dismissal from the performance and/or organization.
• Use good judgment at all times. When in doubt...don’t do it!

Grade checks will occur every month beginning the first full week in September. Student leaders will need to collect grade checks from each member in their section. On the last day of the week of grade checks, student leaders will turn them in to Mr. Sharp. Any student with an "C" or lower in

All students are encouraged to take private lessons in order to improve their individual playing skills. While directors are skilled instructors on the various instruments in the band, there is simply no substitute for private instruction received from someone who is considered to be a professional performer on a particular instrument.

Each student participating must contribute their "fair share" of the cost not funded by the school. The cost of performances, competitions, festivals, and any other event outside the school must be shared by all involved to make it a fair share of the cost involved. SKYHAWKS

For the 2025 Fall Marching Season, the Booster Pack will be $500. This does not cover winter/spring ensembles.

It is important all families pay a fair share of the costs associated with trips and competitions. It is not possible to attend all these events without everyone contributing to the cost.

We have plenty of fundraising opportunities to reduce the amount for each performer. Please check the  app for specific events or SignUp for opportunities during the fireworks booth July 1st-4th.

This year, we plan on adding 1 more field competition than before as well as participating in more parades than last year. This adds to the cost of the program and as a result the cost of each student's fair share of the cost.

ALL PACKS MUST BE PAID OR IN THE PROCESS OF BEING PAID IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN ADDITIONAL SCHOOL EVENTS AND PROGRAMS. STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT PAID BACK FROM PREVIOUS YEARS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL EVENTS SUCH AS HOMECOMING EVENTS AS WELL AS PROM EVENTS.

We want every student to have the opportunity to participate. The school provides funding for school-related events such as football games, as well as city events such as the Fontana Christmas Parade. The reality of the program is most, if not all band festival/competition trips are funded completely by band members, either through private sources (student jobs, parents, etc or through fundraising. Individual student accounts are set up and administered through the high school A.S.B. Income related to school events and functions of the program are maintained/supervised by the director of the programs and ASB bookkeeper in accordance with school/district policy. Income from booster fundraising activities or other deposits are maintained/supervised by the booster representatives and are for the sole purpose of the music program activities. Specific payment schedules are set up for fall/spring trips. Please visit with a director regarding any circumstance which would prevent you from making a scheduled payment. During the year, if you need any specific information concerning individual account balance, etc., you can visit your student's ASB account.

We want every student to have the opportunity to participate in trips regardless of the financial situation. This is why we have several fundraising opportunities through the booster program to help and volunteer. Fundraising helps keep the fair-share contributions to a minimum.

INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNT GUIDELINE

• Band Packs: Fair-Share contributions for individual students will be applied towards individual student ASB account. These payments do not qualify as a "charitable contribution" under IRS Code 170 (c1)
• Fundraisers: All fundraised money will go into the program general activity account to benefit all students. Contact the music boosters for opportunities to raise money by volunteering.
• Donations: Donated funds to the boosters will go into the program general activity account to benefit all students. Donations to boosters are a "charitable contribution" under IRS Code 501 (c3 Check with your tax professional for more details regarding donations and write-offs.
• Payment Information for trips, fees, fundraisers or deposits:
  • Payments by check should be made out to Summit High School and include a phone number, driver's license number and clearly labeled with trip, fees, fundraiser or donation in memo of check. (Bottom left) Unless paying the boosters directly
  • Payments by cash must be placed in a sealed envelope with the following information on the front; student name, amount and description of payment (trip, fee, fundraiser or donation
  • Payment Information for Music Boosters: Payments by check should be made out to SHS SkyHawks Music Boosters and include a phone number, driver's license number and clearly labeled with reason, fundraiser or donation in memo of check. (Bottom left)

1.A student's individual account is non-transferable to another student (does not apply to siblings

2. Band/Booster Pack payments made over-and-above costs (between $20 and $100.00) will be refunded to the individual student for additional trip expenses or may be carried over to the next school year up to a maximum of $100 over the cost of this year's Band Pack.

3.Band/Booster Pack payments are refundable provided they are requested in writing before the published trip refund deadlines.

Please note that refunds are avaialbe in the event, your student cannot continue.  However, the following schedule will give you an idea of how it will work.

Becuase the money paid is often spent real time, full refunds will not be possible.

Yes! We still use Facebook and, contrary to most kids' beliefs, it is not just for "old people". It is a great tool to communicate events and ask questions for all to see. Request to be added so you can stay informed of all things being music program. Anyone can join.

The SkyHawks Marching Regiment has a very active, supportive parent organization known as the SkyHawks Performance. The booster association includes parents from band and color guard. Without the hard work and dedication of the parents, the Summit band program would not be as successful. The music boosters are a 501(c3) non-profit organization. Any donations given to the booster program are tax deductible. Check with your tax expert for more details. There are numerous areas in which interested parents can be involved in supporting the activities of the band. Check the website for contact information as well as viewing opportunities to volunteer at events. Fundraising opportunities are available to raise money through boosters to pay for band and booster packs. General meetings of the boosters are held every month throughout the school year; however, numerous committees do most of the organizational planning. Check out the calendar for meeting dates and times.

In order to provide for the health and safety of students, to support students who say "no" to drug use, and to provide an opportunity for those taking drugs to receive help in locating programs which can provide assistance, the district will conduct mandatory random drug testing for all high school students who choose to participate in extra-curricular leadership programs. (Board Policy 5131.61)

The identified student desires to participate in an extra-curricular leadership program and hereby agrees to be subject to its terms for the current school year. The student and parent/guardian accept the method of obtaining urine specimens, testing, and analysis of such specimens, and all other aspects of the program and agree to cooperate in furnishing any specimens that are required.

The student and parent/guardian agree and consent to the release of the sampling, disclosure of the testing, and results thereof for use by District employees' in administrating the Drug Testing Program. The parent/guardian/student waive any privacy rights each may possess to the extent provided for by law, except information disclosed shall be used for program purposes.

A concussion is a brain injury, and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. They can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a "ding" or a bump on the head can be serious. You can't see a concussion and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury or can take hours or days to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms or signs of concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away.

Symptoms May include one or more of the following: Headaches Amnesia "Don't feel right" Nausea or vomitingFatigue or low energy Sadness Neck pain Balance problems or dizziness Nervousness or anxiety Blurred, double, or fuzzy vision. Irritability Sensitivity to light or noiseMore emotional Confusion Feeling sluggish or slowed down.Concentration or memory problems (forgetting game plays) Feeling foggy or groggy Repeating the same question/comment Change in sleep patterns

Signs observed by teammates, parents and coaches include: Appears dazed. Vacant facial expression Confused about assignment. Forgets plays. Is unsure of game, score, or opponent. Moves clumsily or displays lack of coordination. Answers questions slowly Slurred speech Shows behavior or personality changes. Can't recall events prior to hit. Can't recall events after hit. Seizures or convulsionsristry Any change in typical behavior or personality Loses consciousness

What can happen if my child keeps on playing with a concussion or returns too soon? Athletes with the signs and symptoms of concussion should be removed from play immediately. Continuing to play with the signs and symptoms of a concussion leaves the young athlete especially vulnerable to greater injury. There is an increased risk of significant damage from a concussion for a period of time after that concussion occurs, particularly if the athlete suffers another concussion before completely recovering from the first one. This can lead to prolonged recovery, or even to severe brain swelling (second impact syndrome) with devastating and even fatal consequences. It is well known that adolescent or teenage athletes will often underreport symptoms of injuries. And concussions are no different. As a result, education of administrators, coaches, parents and students is the key for student-athlete's safety. If you think your child has suffered a concussion Any athlete even suspected of suffering a concussion should be removed from the game or practice immediately. No athlete may return to activity after an apparent head injury or concussion, regardless of how mild it seems or how quickly symptoms clear, without medical clearance. Close observation of the athlete should continue for several hours. The new CIF Bylaw 313 now requires implementation of long and well-established return to play concussion guidelines that have been recommended for several years: "A student-athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from competition at that time and for the remainder of the day."

"A student-athlete who has been removed may not return to play until the athlete is evaluated by a licensed heath care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussion and received written clearance to return to play from that health care provider". You should also inform your child's coach and athletic trainer if you think that your child may have a concussion. Remember it's better to miss one game than miss the whole season. If your child needs emergency medical care and you aren't available to give formal consent to medical authorities, care may be unnecessarily delayed. To protect your child, leave a completed EMERGENCY CONSENT FORM with your baby-sitter, day care center or temporary guardian. In the event of a medical emergency, the form should accompany your child to the hospital.

The total fair share for each student in the marching band is $550-$600 for the fall 2026. This allows the program to achieve performance goals set for the year. It is important fair-share contributions be paid by all participants of the program. Should the balance not be paid by November 28, 2026, your student might not be able to participate in other extracurricular activities which require monetary payment (e.g. Prom, Graduation, etc

If payment is made in full and you decide to fundraise, additional funds will go towards the entire program.
