The Portuguese Cultural Association of Bermuda (PCA) is exploring the possibility of launching a dedicated GCSE Portuguese preparation programme, separate from the standard Escola Portuguesa classes.
The GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a British qualification widely recognised by universities and employers internationally. A GCSE in Portuguese can strengthen a student's university application, broaden the range of institutions they can apply to, and provide a meaningful and lasting credential for their heritage language.
The GCSE in Portuguese corresponds broadly to level B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), meaning students can understand and communicate in a range of everyday situations with reasonable confidence. An A-Level in Portuguese corresponds to approximately B2 to C1, reflecting a significantly higher degree of fluency, nuance, and the ability to engage with complex texts and ideas.
The Portuguese GCSE is offered by Pearson Edexcel and is assessed across four papers (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing), each carrying equal weight. It covers five topic areas: Identity and Culture; Local Area, Holidays and Travel; School; Future Aspirations and Work; and International and Global Dimension. The assessment has been developed by Pearson Edexcel in collaboration with Camões, I.P., the Portuguese government body responsible for promoting the Portuguese language internationally, with which the PCA has been formally associated since 2023. See here for more information from a brochure on the assessment. Please note that most secondary schools in Bermuda are approved Pearson Edexcel Exam Centres.
The programme would be more academically rigorous than the standard Escola Portuguesa curriculum and open to students from any school, with the exam administered through their respective school. Should it prove successful, the PCA may consider expanding it to offer A-Level Portuguese in the future.
We would be grateful for your feedback to help us assess the level of interest in the community and plan accordingly.
