Your kid looks you in the eye. And lies.
Maybe they swear up and down that something didn't happen- something you know happened. Maybe they twist situations until you're not sure what's real anymore. Maybe they say things so cruel and cutting that you're still thinking about them at 2am.
And on top of all of that? You don't know what to do in the moment. Consequences haven't worked. Lectures haven't worked. Staying calm hasn't worked. Well, at least not consistently.
Hear me say this! The reason nothing is working probably isn't because you're doing it wrong. It's because lying, manipulation, and verbal aggression are some of the most misunderstood behaviors kids show us.
They're not character problems. They're not disrespect. They're not manipulation the way adults manipulate.
They're behaviors that come from protection mode. They are communicating something important- but with behaviors, not the real words.
And when you start trying to hear (and give them) their voice, everything about how you respond changes. Including what you actually say in those awful moments.
