Poetries in English Magazine is anti-conformity. We publish the best, most intriguing, most well-crafted literature and art today, regardless of form or content.
What distinguishes Poetries in English from other prestigious literary journals is our iconoclastic approach to art and literatures in English. We are proud to be one of the most daring literary magazines in publishing today. Each issue is unafraid, bold, but cerebral.
Our past contributors have included many esteemed and influential poets and artists such as Rachel Hadas, David Cazden, Timothy Liu, Philip Fried, Charles Kell, Ravi Shankar, July Westhale, Amanda Chiado, Celine Saintclare, Joseph Ray York, and many others. We are also proud to have published work from many emerging artists who have attained significant success since their work first appeared in our journal.
Poetries in English Magazine will consider for publication work in the genres listed below. Please submit to only one genre per submission. You may submit to multiple genres, but that will incur additional submission fees.
We are a paying market. We pay a small honorarium to each contributor for general submissions. The inaugural Louise Glück Prize for Best Poem or Prose is now open. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash award and publication in Poetries in English Magazine. Non-winning entries will also be considered for regular publication.
Our next volume will be Issue 2.1 which will be published on October 1, 2026.
We nominate work published in our journal to the Best American Essays, Best of the Net, Best New Poets, Best Small Fictions, Best American Short Stories, Best American Mystery and Suspense, Best American Food and Travel Writing, Best American Science and Nature Writing, Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, Best Spiritual Literature, Best Microfiction, The Chautauqua Janus Prize, and the Pushcart Prize anthologies.
Submission Guidelines
Poetry
Up to five poems per submission in a single document.
Fiction or Creative Nonfiction
Submissions of up to 10,000 words. Double-spaced please.
Reviews
Submit book reviews of any length, but we rarely publish anything over 1,000 words. Double-spaced please.
Translations
Submit up to five translations. Be sure to obtain the proper permissions prior to submission.
Film
Submit one film or clip. We prefer reasonably short films, but we are undogmatic about this.
Audio
Submit one audio piece. As with films, we prefer short content, but once again, this is not orthodoxy.
Essays
We are very laissez-faire regarding the definition of essays. We typically publish essays that are literary or intellectual in scope and tend to surprise us, whether with their virtuosity or the piquancy of the topic treated.
Art
Please send us a portfolio of three to five images as .png files.
Submission Fees
Poetries in English Magazine charges a nominal fee of $10 for general submissions. This fee supports the journal and our mission to pay the writers and artists that we publish. For $30 we will make a decision within two weeks and offer a critique of your submission. We will also provide a list of alternative publications that may be receptive to your work. And finally, for $150 we offer The "In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markievicz" Sustainer Submission. This submission option enables the prospective contributor to submit work directly to the editors for free for one calendar year and receive a decision within two weeks. This is an excellent option for those interested in supporting the literary and artistic mission of the journal.
We are now reading for the inaugural Louise Glück Prize for Best Poem or Prose. Please send up to five poems or a single piece of prose up to 10,000 words. The submission fee is $35 and the outcome of the competition will be announced in early 2027. Non-winning entries will also be considered for regular publication.
Response Time
We read quickly and carefully and will respond to all general submissions within 3-6 months. For an expedited response time of two weeks, please select either the General Submission with Critique or The "In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markievicz" Sustainer Submission option.
We do not accept previously published work aside from art, films, and audios. Poetries in English Magazine acquires First North American Serial Rights for the work we publish. The contributor also grants Poetries in English Magazine the non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide right to archive, display, and distribute the work on our website and social media platforms and in any future digital or print anthologies produced by Poetries in English Magazine. If your work is later republished, we request you note its initial publication in Poetries in English Magazine.
