    About this project

This project is about understanding the experiences of children and young people if your parent or carer is leaving, or has recently left, the Armed Forces.

We are inviting young people aged 12–19 to take part in designing the research from the start to make sure it is right.

We are looking for 12 young people aged 12–19 to join our Youth Advisory Board. We want the group to include young people from all four nations of the UK and from all three Armed Forces (Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force). Once we have everyone’s application, we will decide who takes part to make sure lots of different experiences are included.

    Your role

You will help design the research, including the questions asked and how best to get children and young people to take part.

Your voice is important and will be taken seriously.

We will work with the whole group to teach you what you need to know to be the best researcher you can. You don’t need to know it before you start.

    Time and thank you

You will get a £10 voucher for each session you attend
    There will be:
Between 7 and 9 sessions in the first 2 months to train you to be a researcher and to design the initial research themes and questions.
12 - 14 more sessions over the next 16 months to make sure every step of the project is right for children and young people.

    Your choice

    Taking part is your choice.

You can stop at any time
You do not have to give a reason
Nothing bad will happen if you choose not to take part or to leave

    Support and safety

An important part of doing research together is making sure everyone feels safe, supported and listened to. Forces Children Scotland will check in with you throughout the project and can offer extra one-to-one support if needed.

At the start of the project, you will choose a trusted adult who can support you while you take part. They will know when sessions are happening, but they will not be told what you say unless we are worried about your safety or someone else’s safety. If this happens, we will try to talk to you first before sharing information with them or other adults whose job it is to help keep people safe.

    Privacy

Your information will be kept safe and private
It will only be shared with the research team
Your information will be stored securely and may be used for future research.

    Applying to take part

We would love to hear from you, but applying does not mean you will be offered a place. We will be in touch to let you know.

If you are not offered a place this time:

We will keep you updated about the project
You may be able to take part in the second part of the project
We may contact you if a space becomes available later
