  • 2026 Dig In! Tree, Bulb & Native Perennial Grant

  • ABOUT DIG IN!: The Dig In! Community Garden Program, implemented by City Green and funded by Passaic County Board of County Commissioners, aims to support the creation of vibrant community gardens for the production and access to healthy food, neighborhood beautification and community enhancement.

    ABOUT THE GRANT:  The Dig In! Tree, Bulb and Perennial grant supplies daffodil bulbs, native trees and native, perennial plants to eligible schools, municipalities and community groups in Passaic County to promote habitat restoration and neighborhood beautification. Site preparation and planting is completed by the grantee and technical assistance, tools and educational support is available from City Green.

    GRANT TIMELINE:

    • Application Deadline: August 7th, 2026
    • Grant Notification: Late August/Early September 2026
    • Grant Awards Ceremony, Training and Plant Delivery: October 6th, 2026
    • Plant Installation Deadline: November 30th, 2026
    • Grant Report Due: December 11th, 2026

    GRANT REQUIREMENTS​ and REPORTING:

    • All accepted applicants must attend an in-person grant training and awards ceremony to receive their grant. Plants will be available for pick up at this event on October 6th, 2026. 
    • Project must be completed by November 30th, 2026.
    • Grantees must distribute a press release or social media post about the grant and planting project (hashtags and press release template provided by City Green).
    • Grantees must provide before, during and after photos of the project due December 11th, 2026.

  • Native Trees

    Grantees can select from 4 native tree types in the amount they are granted. Trees come 6 - 8 ft. tall and in 15 - 20 gallon pots with 1 - 2 inch trunk caliper. Grantees will receive 1 bag of compost and 1 bag of mulch for each tree awarded. Applicants must have access to water and an effective irrigation plan to qualify.

    Grant includes native perennial plants in 1-2 gallon pots in amount granted. Herbaceous Perennial Kits include: Full Sun Site, Wet Site, Deer-Resistant, and Shady Site. Woody and Herbaceous Perennial Kits include: Average and Wet Site. Applicants must have access to a reliable water source and an effective site preparation and maintenance plan to qualify.

    Grant includes bags of daffodil bulbs in amount requested. For a full bloom effect, we recommend 50 - 100 daffodils per 20 square foot area. Sites must have 3+ hours of sunlight and workable soil.

  • Pollinator Planter

    Only available to schools and community organizations without access to workable soil. Site must receive 6 + hours of sunlight and easy access to water. Includes 1 - 3 metal raised garden bed, soil, and 9 native perennial species. Kit comes with planting education and City Green-led community installation.
