    All master’s students who will be registered at GSAPP for 12 or more points per semester in the Fall 2026 semester will be eligible to apply according to the eligibility criteria outlined for each position. The assignment of assistantships is made on the basis of qualifications for each position. Because these are merit-based positions, preference is given to applicants who have experience in the course or subject matter. Students are only eligible for one position per semester.

    Assistantship holders will be asked to work 12 hours per week, with compensation of $6,338.

  • assistantship code: Buell

    Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture

    Eligibility: All current GSAPP master's students without additional work appointments, who have not worked at the Buell Center within the past academic year, are encouraged to apply.

    Background/Skills: This year, the Buell seeks individuals with some combination of skills from the following areas:

    • Advanced research, writing and editing skills
    • Experience with digital humanities, data visualization and coding
    • Familiarity with contemporary environmental discourse in architecture and beyond
    • Strong organizational and communication skills

    Buell Center research assistants must be self-motivated, organized, and capable of working individually and in groups. Open and responsive communication is of primary importance.

    Job Description: Assist the Buell Center’s research project, tentatively named “Green-counting,” on the convergence in recent decades of quantitative methods and climate discourse in contemporary design. Research consists of literature review, data preparation, and analysis based on syllabi collections at the Buell, as well as gathering other data from outside this pedagogical sphere.

    Job Description: Responsible for course preparation, scheduling, and organization. May be required to assist with course and event logistics, give tutorials, archive student work, and assist with other tasks as needed.

    Eligibility: A 2nd or 3rd year MArch student who has received a HP or P in all previous studio classes, and is familiar with the GSAPP procedures and facilities: Avery Library, digital programs, fabrication shops and studio culture.

    Job Description: Core Studio TAs are crucial in implementing and collaborating in the Core I curriculum, which requires a willingness to make a long-term commitment to the growth of the students and the School as a whole. They must be highly energetic and excited to collaborate. The Assistants can gain valuable, critical experience.

    Each Core Studio TA will be assigned to an individual studio section and work with students in the design studio, as well as after hours (including providing some time over weekends), approximately 12 hours per week. They will help students via desk crits, tutorials, section workshops, and outside resources, with special attention and care given to basic representation skills. They also will help prepare the Open House display and other collective shows and reviews. Furthermore, TAs are there to boost the studio atmosphere, providing general guidance and support. They should document reviews with photographs and notes for the studio. They will work in tandem with critics to further engage with student development and maintain a higher standard of work.

    Core Studio TAs will also coordinate with visual studies TAs in order to ensure a connection between ADR and studio work, and provide students with access to a greater number of available resources and people.

    As a role model for incoming students, Core Studio TAs have the opportunity to interact with new architectural ideas and aid in the development of meaningful conversation and relationships among students at GSAPP.

    Eligibility: Open to Master’s students in M.Arch, MSAAD, and other Architecture programs, as well as qualified students in other GSAPP master’s programs. Preference will be given to applicants who have successfully completed the relevant Building Technology coursework.

    Background/Skills: High proficiency in relevant software tools:

    • Tech I: Ladybug, Honeybee, and ClimateStudio plugins for Rhino/Grasshopper
    • Tech III & IV: Autodesk Revit
    • Tech V: Tally (for life cycle assessment in Revit) and Ansys (for structural/environmental simulation); familiarity with fabrication or construction methods is also required.

    Strong technical, organizational, and communication skills; ability to support students effectively in both lab and review settings.

    Job Description: Attend and support Tech classes by assisting with software lab sessions, review assignments, support students in office hours, organize room assignments, prepare step-by-step software instructions. In addition, one Tech assistantship role (the Tech TA) will require strong graphic skills and organizational/leadership passion to support Tech faculty and curriculum efforts.

    Background/Skills: High proficiency in relevant technical tools (Rhino modeling, parametric modeling with Grasshopper, and Blender as well as Adobe Suite, including rendering, animation, and post production). Strong drawing, physical modeling and visual communication skills, ability to give constructive criticism, experiment, and have an open mind.

    Job Description: Give software demos, give advice and criticism during class, lead hands-on tutorial sessions during office hours, and support faculty and students with all aspects of the course and facilities.

    Background/Skills: Proficiency with the standard suite of architectural design tools used at GSAPP, and an advanced level of expertise in advanced topics such as Scripting, GIS, Image Making, Animation, and other specific softwares taught in Computation electives. Strong visual communication skills, ability to give constructive criticism, experiment, and have an open mind.

    Job Description: Assist faculty teaching Computation electives, including but not limited to: giving software demos, leading hands-on tutorial sessions, giving advice and critiques to help students with all aspects of the course and facilities.

    Background/Skills: An engagement with the critical study and theoretical discussion of architectural design and architectural design practices is required.

    Specific focus on climate, environment and interspecies related research, and familiarity with the traditions of ‘Political Ecology’, ‘Science, Society and Technology Studies’, ‘Post and Decolonial Studies’ and ‘Gender, Queer and Trans Studies’ will be highly considered.

    Job Description/Responsibilities: Research Assistant will be required to engage on documental research, archive making and the development of representation material of the way specific architectural devices operate as transscalar.

    Job description: Responsible for supporting faculty in research, organization, course preparation, and coordinating class activities. May be required to attend classes/events and assist students. Dependent on skills and experience, the assignment may include one or more of the following areas:

    • HP Courses and Studios - Assist in the preparation and archiving of HP courses and/or studios, facilitate guest speakers, advise students, and give tutorials.
    • Digital/Graphics - Assist students with digital documentation, digital visualization techniques and software (such as Sketchup, Adobe Suite, Scene, Reality Capture, ReCap Photo, Lightroom, Rhino, Grasshopper, and Sketchfab) in courses and studios, and act as a general resource for students with technical questions related to coursework. May also be asked to give tutorials and provide technical and teaching support, compile studio reports, and archive work.
    • GIS - Assist students with the use of ArcGIS in courses and studios, and act as a general resource for students with technical questions related to coursework. May also be asked to give tutorials and provide technical and teaching support and archive work.
    • Lab - Prepare lab materials for courses, assist students in the lab, and give tutorials.
    • Research - Assist faculty with research projects.

    Assistants with a high proficiency in GIS and other skills (e.g. visualization, coding, urban analytics, etc.) may be assigned to assist students with GIS or analytics exercises and questions during class and/or regular office hours and via email, give tutorials, and/or be a general resource for students with other technical questions.

    Assistants working with studios (in the Spring) may be responsible for coordination of studio guests and tutorials; facilitating presentations; organizing and archiving studio work. May be required to give tutorials and assist students during class and/or regular office hours and via email.
