Be Still and Know Grants are available to clergy for a month’s additional leave from their congregational context any given year. These grants target clergy serving smaller congregations that do not afford clergy a sabbatical (3 months away) nor have the capacity to apply for Christian Theological Seminary's Clergy Renewal Program, funded by the Lilly Endowment. Criteria for these grants are: clergy serving congregations with budgets approximately less than $200,000 (may vary slightly based on denomination) and have an average worship attendance of less than 125.
The month must be taken all at once. The month of leave is not intended to replace the pastor’s normal vacation and/or sick leave during the calendar year. The resources up to $5,000 should be used to provide for self-care for the pastor and the pastor’s family, or as needed, congregational care and pulpit supply costs. Funds cannot be used for capital improvements.
This leave time is not about producing or fixing anything. It is designed for rest, for reconnecting with their spouse, playing with their children, visiting with friends they haven’t seen in ages, taking a trip with an aging parent, or visiting a place they’ve always wanted to see but simply did not have the funds or time. It’s designed to “be still and know”- words from Scripture that speak deeply to who they are as God’s beloved.
Organizations that receive funding will be required to collect survey data using a brief 10 question evaluation (provided by CBA) at the close of the sabbatical.
