Snakes Of Central Washington Presentation Saturday, July 25th 2026
  • Snakes Of Central Washington Presentation

    Saturday, July 25th 10am-11:30am

Join local wildlife biologist Adrian Slade for an introduction to the fascinating snakes of Central Washington. From secretive Ring-necked snakes to the iconic Northern Pacific rattlesnake, this presentation will explore the ecology, behavior, and natural history of the region’s native snakes and the important roles they play in our shrubsteppe ecosystems.

Learn how these often-misunderstood animals survive in one of Washington's harshest landscapes, the conservation challenges they face, and what makes the Yakima Canyon such an important place for reptile biodiversity.

Special attention will be given to rattlesnakes, including practical tips for staying safe outdoors and coexisting with these remarkable animals.

This is a kid-friendly event for ages 8+ featuring live snakes for viewing and handling following the presentation.

Adrian Slade is a naturalist and herpetologist based in Central Washington, where she has spent the past decade observing snakes in their natural habitats. A lifelong snake appreciator, her work is guided by the desire to give back to the shy, misunderstood creatures who bring her joy and peace.

Her research focuses on the natural history, behavior, and conservation of Pacific Northwest reptiles - especially northern pacific rattlesnakes and the imperiled striped whipsnake. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Central Washington University, where she studied under Dr. Daniel Beck. Her graduate research examined the effects of utility-scale solar energy on reptiles in Southern California.

Today, she leads a state–funded project to map the distribution and support the recovery of striped whipsnakes in the mid-Columbia Basin shrubsteppe. She is passionate about bridging science and public understanding through storytelling to dispel myths, foster coexistence, and share the quiet wonder of a life spent alongside snakes.

Whether you're a hiker, naturalist, wildlife enthusiast, or simply curious about the snakes living in your backyard, this talk will leave you with a greater appreciation for some of Central Washington's most misunderstood wildlife.
