Dental hygiene procedures are generally very safe. However, dental hygiene treatment is not guaranteed. Many factors contribute to the success or failure of treatment including but not limited to: existing oral conditions, extent and severity of infection, ability to tolerate treatment, and quality and frequency of daily oral care.
Dental hygiene treatment, like treatment of any other part of the body, has some inherent risks that are seldom great enough to offset the benefits of treatment. Common risks associated with dental hygiene procedures include:
*Drug or chemical reactions. Certain materials used may trigger allergic or sensitivity reactions.
*Long term numbness (paresthesia). Local anesthetic or its administration can result in transient, or in rare cases, permanent numbness.
*Muscle or jaw joint tenderness. Keeping the jaw open can precipitate a TMJ disorder in a predisposed patient.
*Sensitivity in teeth or gums, infection, or bleeding.
*Swallowing or aspirating small objects or debris.
Dental hygienists provide only preventive or therapeutic services defined by the Colorado Dental Practice Act. A referral to a licensed dentist or physician will be made for all other conditions such as dental decay, tooth extraction, fabrication of dentures or partials, and intra and extra oral lesions. A recommendation for referral to a dental specialist such as an oral surgeon or periodontist will be made only in specific cases. An annual examination by a general dentist is routinely recommended for dental diagnosis and dental treatment. For all referrals, the patient or responsible party is responsible for the selection of the dentist. Open Mobile Care assumes no responsibility for diagnosis, treatment plan, or treatment provided by the licensed dentist.
Dental hygienists are licensed and regulated by the Colorado Dental Board under the Department of Regulatory Agencies.
