• Virginia State Council Emergency Nurses Association - 2026 Awards Application/Nomination

    Deadline to submit nomination/applications by August 15, 2026

  • Criteria to Receive Awards: 

    • Nominees for all Virginia ENA awards must be current ENA members, except for nominees of the Clinical Excellence Award and the Virginia ENA Behind the Scenes Award. ENA membership is not required for these award categories.
    • One nomination/letter of support is required (does not have to be an ENA member) and MUST include a brief narrative highlighting the nominee's accomplishments and provide specific examples demonstrating how the nominee meets the qualifications and criteria for the award.
      • Provide the name, job title, and workplace (with address) of the nominee.
      • Letter(s) of support must include the name and phone number of the supporter.

    The Award Categories are:

    Nurse Leader Award

    Clinical Excellence Award (Nurse Rockstar/Nursing in the Trenches)

    Nurse Educator Award

    Emerging Professional Award

    Virginia ENA "Behind The Scenes" Award 

    Bob Shumate Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award 

  • Nurse Leader Award Criteria:

    • Creates an environment that encourages teamwork, mutual respect, and safe patient care.
    • An active member of ENA that shows support for VENA through advocating for team member professional development and event participation.
    • Elevates the practice of emergency/forensic nursing and serves as a catalyst for positive healthcare change.

  • Clinical Excellence Award (Nurse Rockstar/Nursing in the Trenches):

    • ENA membership is not required for nomination or selection for this award.
    • The nominee must work in a direct patient care role.
    • Exemplifies outstanding clinical skills in emergency/forensic nursing practice.
    • Demonstrates the ability to lead, influence, and improve outcomes for patients across the continuum of emergency/forensic nursing practice.
    • Provide specific examples of how the nominee meets the award criteria (QI projects, education, or other initiatives related to patient care, injury prevention, special populations, and forensic nursing).

  • Nurse Educator Award:

    • Demonstrates education competence as a mentor, preceptor, resource, or instructor in programs for emergency/forensic nurses, EMS teams, or other health care professionals.
    • Alternatively, developed or implemented educational programs, especially those that are innovative in nature for nursing students and/or patients and their families.

  • Emerging Professional Award:

    • Newer ENA member, less than 5 years.
    • Demonstrates a high level of enthusiasm as a Virginia ENA member through promotion of membership, program participation, or educational role modeling for professional colleagues.

  • Virginia ENA "Behind The Scenes" Award:

    • This award recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding support for ENA by "going the extra mile."
    • ENA membership is not required for nomination or selection for this award.
    • Demonstrates active support of VENA through participation in council events or initiatives, committee involvement, member recruitment and engagement, mentorship, advocacy, or other meaningful contributions of time, talent, or expertise.

  • Bob Shumate Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award:

    • This award honors an ENA member whose career achievements reflect dedicated service, accomplishments and/or sustained contributions to the profession of emergency/forensic Nursing.
