The Interview
For Full Editorial submissions. Express Profile submitters are welcome to skip ahead to the Media section. These questions are written specifically for wine producers — please answer as thoroughly and honestly as you wish. The richness of your answers shapes the depth of your feature.
Every winemaker has an origin story — a bottle, a vineyard, a person, or a moment that made this life feel inevitable. What was yours? And if you didn't grow up in wine, what brought you here from somewhere else?
Tell us about the land you work. What does this particular place — this soil, this climate, this hillside or valley — do that nowhere else in the world can replicate?
Walk us through a year in your vineyard — from the first signs of growth through harvest. What are the moments that define the season, and what does each one demand of you?
Tell us about the vintage that humbled you — the year the weather, the conditions, or simple chance forced you to adapt in ways you hadn't anticipated. What did it teach you?
And tell us about the vintage you are most proud of — not necessarily the one that got the highest score, but the one that felt most like the wine you were trying to make.
Travel is inseparable from wine culture — regions, producers, and techniques shape each other across borders and centuries. Which wine region outside your own has most influenced how you think about what you make, and why?
The conversation around natural wine, minimal intervention, and low-sulphur production has reshaped how the industry talks about itself. Where do you actually stand — in your philosophy and in your cellar?
Sustainability and regenerative farming have moved from the margins to the mainstream in wine. What does your own approach look like in practice — and where do you still feel the honest tension between ideal and reality?
Tell us about a wine you have made that surprised you — that came out of the cellar as something you hadn't fully anticipated. What happened, and is it still in production?
The relationship between winemaker and vine is one of the most discussed in agriculture. How do you think about your role — are you guiding the wine, expressing the land, or something more complicated than either of those?
Wine tourism has transformed how producers connect with their audience. What does a visit to your estate look and feel like — and what do you want a visitor to understand about your wine that they couldn't get from the bottle alone?
Some of the most interesting wine being made today is coming from regions that weren't on anyone's map ten years ago. Which emerging region or varietal do you think deserves far more attention than it is currently getting?
What does the next generation of winemakers most need to understand — about the craft, the land, the business, and the long patient work of building something that lasts?
When you open someone else's bottle — as a guest, not a professional — what are you looking for? What makes you feel that a winemaker truly understood what they were trying to do?
Luxury in wine means something different to every producer. For some it lives in the rarity, for others in the precision, for others still in the honesty of a wine that tastes exactly like where it came from. How do you define it?
What is coming next for your estate — a new varietal, a new vintage, a new project, a new market? What has your full attention right now?
What is the question no one ever asks a winemaker — the one that would actually get to something true about the work? Ask it here, and answer it.
