Interview Questions (skippable for Express Profile):
Describe your journey as a travel photographer. What drew you to this genre?
How does the relationship between place, light, and your creative vision inform your photographic process?
Share a memorable experience or story behind one of your favorite travel images.
What advice would you offer aspiring travel photographers seeking to develop their own visual voice?
The Interview
For Full Editorial submissions. Express Profile submitters are welcome to skip ahead to the Portfolio section. These questions are designed to find the eye behind the lens — please answer as freely and fully as you wish.
Tell us your origin story as a photographer — not the gear list or the first camera, but the real one. The moment you understood that a photograph could say something that words could not.
Walk us through how your eye has developed — the photographers who influenced you, the assignments that changed what you were looking for, the places that rewired how you see.
Every photographer has a destination that claimed them — a place whose light, texture, people, or atmosphere they keep returning to in their work. What is yours, and what does it give you that nowhere else does?
Tell us about a photograph — one you took, or one that exists somewhere in the world — that you consider genuinely extraordinary. Not technically perfect. Extraordinary. What makes it that?
Travel photography sits in a complicated ethical space — between witness and intruder, between sharing and exploiting. How do you think about your responsibility to the places and people you photograph?
Light is everything in photography — and every destination has its own. Tell us about a light you have chased — a time of day, a season, a weather condition — and what it produces that no other light can.
The relationship between the planned shot and the accidental one is central to travel photography. What is the most important photograph you have ever taken entirely by chance?
Technology has democratized photography in ways that are both extraordinary and complicated. What do you think is still beyond what any phone camera or AI can do — and will that always be true?
Tell us about a journey you undertook specifically for the photograph — a trip, an expedition, a return visit — where the image justified everything it cost to get there.
Food, architecture, landscape, culture, people — travel photography contains multitudes. Which subject do you find endlessly challenging, and why does it refuse to give itself up easily?
The edit is as important as the capture for many photographers. How do you think about the relationship between what you saw and what you make of it in post-production — and where is the line for you?
Which destination do you believe is the most photographically misrepresented — where the cliché image has entirely replaced the real one — and what would a truer picture look like?
When you travel not to photograph but simply to be somewhere, what changes? Do you see differently without a camera, and does that feed back into the work?
Luxury in travel photography means something different to everyone. For some it is access — to restricted places, to private moments. For others it is time, or the absence of a brief. How do you define it?
What is coming next — a project, an expedition, an exhibition, a book? What has your full attention right now?
What is the question no one ever asks a travel photographer — the one that would actually get to something true about the work? Ask it here, and answer it.
