Montpelier Arts Center invites DC, Maryland, and Virginia based Latinx/Latine artists to submit artwork for the juried exhibition “Unearthing Foundations” on view September 11 – November 1, 2026.
What came before influences what comes next, even if we can’t see it. These are our foundations, groundwork, bedrock. It has been built up, taken down, supported and added onto, over and over. Through time, space, and location. From the personal, familial, cultural, and more. We invite local artists (from DC, Maryland, Virginia) of Hispanic/Latine backgrounds to submit work exploring “Unearthing” and the layers upon layers that make up who we are.
CATEGORIES ACCEPTED
Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, hangable sculpture and assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, and sculpture.
2-Dimensional work: up to 48 inches in either direction
This exhibition cannot accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, or works requiring an external electrical source and installation.
3-Dimensional work:
Must fit a pedestal sized 16 inches x 16 inches or take up no more than 4 feet of gallery floor space.
Important Dates:
- Submission Deadline: July 6 by 11:59 pm EST
- Notification of Acceptance: July 24
- Artwork drop off: August 31 pm. Artworks must arrive exhibition-ready.
- Exhibition Dates: September 11 – November 1, 2026, in the Main Gallery
- Opening Reception: Friday, September 18, 7-9 pm.
- Art Talk: Date to be determined
- Unsold artwork pick up: November 2

The Montpelier Arts Center (MAC) is managed by the Maryland-National Park and Planning Commission, Arts and Cultural Heritage division. MAC offers exhibitions for emerging and established artists, music concerts, performances for children and families, and classes in the visual and performing arts.
JUROR
Rebecca Perez is a Washington, DC-based artist. She regularly exhibits her work in group shows throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. In 2025, she was awarded an Arts and Humanities Fellowship Program Grant from the DC Commission of the Arts and Humanities, and her work has been featured online by BmoreArt, Hola Cultura, and The Washington Post. Rebecca is also the Founder and Creative Director of Tendrils, an annual art and literary journal focused on trauma. In addition to publishing the journal, she also facilitates workshops and discussions on healing through creativity.
Submission Guidelines:
- Up to 3 artworks per artist
- Images must be high resolution – JPEG or PNG. Image file should not be larger than 5MB and 1400px wide.
- Each JPG or PNG image file must be named with the artist's first_lastname_title (example: Jane_Doe_Selfportrait.jpg).
- Include title, medium, dimensions, year, and brief description for each artwork

INSURANCE AND LIABILITY
Artwork is insured while on the premises of Montpelier Arts Center.
SALES OF ART
75% of a sale will go to the artist, 25% of a sale will go to the Montpelier Arts Center. Items sold must remain on exhibit for the duration of the show.
