  • The Labor Day Committee is pleased to welcome you as a candidate for Labor Day Queen. Our objective is to ensure that your experience is comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable. In recent years, we have made several improvements to the program and welcome your feedback at any time. Above all, our goal is to celebrate you for the individual you are.
  • Recent updates to the program include:
    • The selection of one "mentor" to be recognized alongside you at the event
    • The selection of one "mentee" (a middle school student) who may enjoy the experience and will also be recognized alongside you at the event
    • The submission of a photograph of you and your mentor for display at the event
    • Submission of a photograph of you and your mentee for display at the event
  • All candidates are invited to ride on the Chamber of Commerce float during the parade. Participation in the parade is required for the First Runner-Up and the 2026 Labor Day Queen. Candidates are expected to arrive at the float no later than 9:30 AM on Monday morning. The parade lineup will be located on the east side of the school, and the Labor Day Committee Secretary will provide the exact location details.
  • The 2026 Labor Day Queen is expected to attend all Labor Day weekend events and will be accompanied by a member of the Labor Day Committee. During these appearances, the Queen will wear her sash and crown. Formal attire is not required for weekend events or 2027 commitments; candidates are encouraged to dress in a manner that is comfortable and appropriate for the weather conditions.
  • In addition, the 2026 Labor Day Queen will be expected to ride on the Chamber of Commerce float at various events and parades throughout the 2026-2027 year, until a successor is crowned. These events may include, but are not limited to, Fish Days (June 2027), Czech Days (June 2027), and Riverboat Days (August 2027). The Labor Day Committee Secretary will provide advance notice of these appearances.

Should the winner decline or not meet these qualifications, the First Runner-Up may elect to enter, provided she meets
  • the same criteria. In prior years, some winners have chosen to participate in the Miss Teen of America Pageant as an alternative. Information regarding this option is available upon request.
The Labor Day Committee will contribute $150 toward the entry fee for either the Miss South Dakota Contest or the Miss Teen of America Pageant. All additional expenses, including but not limited to travel, attire, hair styling, and flowers, are the responsibility of the contestant.
