Colonel Gregory "Evil" Watson Memorial Scholarship
On 15 June 2026, a B-52H Stratofortress operating under the callsign TORCH11 crashed in California during a test flight, killing all eight aircrew members aboard. Among those lost was Colonel Gregory "Evil" Watson, USAFR, Spaatz Award recipient #1120. Colonel Watson was a Command Weapon Systems Officer with more than 3,200 hours in the B-52, a graduated instructor of the prestigious USAF Weapons School, a former Air Force Reserve squadron commander, and an active member of Civil Air Patrol's Barksdale Composite Squadron (LA-005).

This scholarship is established in his memory to create an enduring legacy honoring a legendary combat aviator, commander, mentor, and Spaatzen who now joins the ranks of our Fallen Diamonds. Amount/Quantity: Varies annually based on available funding.
Purpose: The scholarship fund has been named in honor of Colonel Gregory "Evil" Watson, Spaatz #1120 and bomber aviator who lost his life on 15 June 2026 in the TORCH11 B-52 accident in California. The scholarship supports Civil Air Patrol cadet participation in educational, leadership, aerospace, and character development activities. Priority consideration may be given to the Louisiana Wing Summer Encampment. As funding permits, the scholarship may also support other cadet program activities and opportunities consistent with Colonel Watson's legacy of service, leadership, and aviation. The fund may additionally be used to facilitate participation by immediate members of the Watson family in scholarship presentations, recognition events, or other activities associated with the administration and promotion of the scholarship.
Activity Type: Civil Air Patrol cadet activities approved by the TSA Scholarship Committee with priority consideration for the Louisiana Wing Summer Encampment.
Other Scholarship Criteria:
Must be a cadet demonstrating financial need.
Preference may be given to applicants from Louisiana or those with a shared interest in bomber aviation, military service, or service in the Air Force, Air Force Reserve, or Air National Guard.
This scholarship requires an essay.
