• Registration | Science Quest: Caves, Cosmos, Chemists & Castaways | Gr 4-6 | Summer 2026

  • Ontario Tech University’s Engineering Outreach proudly presents Science Quest: Caves, Cosmos, Chemists & Castaways, an exciting STEM experience for students entering Grades 4 to 6! Young explorers will embark on an immersive adventure where each session transports them into a new world: deep underground caves, the vastness of outer space, a bubbling chemistry lab, and a remote deserted island. Through hands-on engineering challenges, experiments, and creative problem-solving, participants will think and act like real scientists and engineers as they complete each mission.

    The Four Quests
Throughout the program, participants will engage in the engineering design process by building, testing, and improving their ideas. Each workshop features a skill-building mini-quest followed by a grand quest to conquer.

    Quest 1: Caves

Get ready to journey deep underground on an epic subterranean safari! Campers will unlock the secrets of geology and paleontology by growing their own dazzling, crystal formations and sculpting custom salt dough fossils to discover how scientists unearth ancient history. After creating cave-inspired masterpiece art, they will step into the boots of civil and geological engineers to tackle the ultimate challenge: figuring out how to safely excavate the Earth without letting the roof cave in!

    Quest 2: Cosmos

3... 2... 1... Blast off! The adventure launches into outer space as campers explore the wild world of aerospace engineering. After investigating how smashing space rocks leave massive craters on planetary surfaces and designing their own model planets, it is time for the main event: Balloon Rocketship Racers! Acting as aerospace engineers, kids will use an iterative design process to tweak, test, and the adjust aerodynamics on their rockets to completely crush the high-speed racing challenge.

    Quest 3: Chemist

Step into a high-energy, bubbling laboratory where things are bound to get beautifully messy! Young scientists will take the reins of the scientific method to mix, measure, and manipulate mind-blowing chemical reactions. From formulating a color-changing, custom pH indicator to unleashing the famous, exploding foam of the elephant's toothpaste reaction, they will work like real chemical engineers to control the speed, gas release, and massive volume of their creations.

    Quest 4: Castaways

S.O.S.! Stranded on a deserted island, campers must use their wits, meteorology, and marine engineering to survive and escape! First, they will build a handy "cloud spotter" to predict wild weather patterns and outsmart the rain. Then, it is a race against time to master buoyancy and Archimedes' principle, scavenge for limited resources, and prototype the ultimate survival raft. They will calculate weight limits, design a hydrodynamic hull, and launch their creations to see whose raft rules the water!
