IEW: Structure & Style® for Students Year 1 Level B & Fix It! Grammar 2 or 3

Catherine Swart

Catherine Swart graduated from the University of Arizona in 2006 with a BA in Education. During her 8-year public teaching career, she taught World History, Honors World History, and AP US History, creating writing-based assignments that developed students’ ability to analyze and compose collegiate-level work.
She currently homeschools her three children (K, 3rd, and 5th grade) and is in her third year teaching middle and high school students in a weekly homeschool co-op. She enjoys reading, baking, traveling, and spending time with her family.

10 (strong 5th grade) and above 

Students should meet one of the following:

• Strong 5th grade or above writing level
• OR readiness for structured middle school-level writing and grammar instruction

Definition of Strong 5th Grader:
A student who is capable of middle school-level writing and grammar work, including the ability to follow structured writing instruction and complete independent written assignments.

This course provides a structured, step-by-step writing and grammar program designed to develop confident, capable writers.

• Keyword Outline (KWO) method for brainstorming and organizing ideas
• Structured paragraph and essay writing
• Multi-source reports and formal writing styles
• Narrative, summary, and creative writing techniques
• Use of checklists to improve clarity and structure
• Grammar application through Fix It! Grammar Level 2 or Level 3, integrated into writing instruction

• Note Making & Outlines
• Writing from Notes
• Retelling Narrative Stories
• Summarizing a Reference
• Writing from Pictures
• Summarizing Multiple References
• Inventive Writing
• Formal Essay Models
• Formal Critique

Students will complete weekly assignments outside of class to reinforce skills and build writing fluency.

• Class Day: Tuesday
• Start Date: September 1, 2026
• Duration: 30-week full-year course
• Class Length: 2 hours (includes a 10-minute break around the 1-hour mark)
• Class time: 1:00-3:00 PM

• Minimum Students: 8
• Maximum Students: 20
• Waitlist Spots Available: 6

• Administrative Fee: $65 (paid to Rooted Resource Center)
• Course Fee: $480 (paid to instructor for full year)
• Supply Fee: None (see supply requirement below)

Parents are responsible for:

• Ensuring students complete all assigned weekly writing and grammar work at home
• Supporting consistency with daily or weekly practice as assigned
• Scheduling make-up instruction if a class session is missed (make-up support provided via video lessons when available)

This course requires consistent home follow-through to ensure student success.

This course is a full-year commitment. Families may choose to pay the tuition in full or divide the cost into two semester payments.

Regardless of the payment option selected, enrollment is for the full academic year. If you choose not to return for the second semester, you remain financially responsible for the full-year tuition, as your student's spot has been reserved for the entire school year.
