• Maryland HIMSS (MD HIMSS) Volunteer Application

  • Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Maryland HIMSS (MD HIMSS). Our volunteers play a critical role in advancing the chapter’s mission, supporting programming, and strengthening member engagement across Maryland’s healthcare and health IT community.

    MD HIMSS seeks volunteers who demonstrate a genuine commitment to the chapter and a desire to contribute time, expertise, and service. Volunteer roles are intended to support chapter operations, programs, and member engagement and are not intended primarily as a means for business development, solicitation, or commercial access to chapter leadership or membership.

    Eligibility Requirements

    To be considered for a volunteer position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Be a current MD HIMSS member in good standing, and
    • Meet one of the following eligibility pathways:

    1. Standard Eligibility Requirement

        - Have maintained continuous MD HIMSS membership for at least one
          (1) year prior to the application date

                    OR

    2. Healthcare Organization Affiliation Exception

        - Be employed by or formally affiliated with a healthcare organization,
          such as a hospital, health system, provider group, payer, public health
          agency, or similar entity, and
        - Be a current MD HIMSS member in good standing

        This exception is intended to encourage active participation from
        individuals directly engaged in healthcare delivery, operations, and
        transformation.

    Submission of this application does not guarantee selection, as all applications are reviewed based on eligibility, availability, prior engagement, and alignment with chapter needs.  

    While not required, applicants may be prioritized if they demonstrate prior engagement with MD HIMSS, including event attendance, participation in chapter activities, or involvement in HIMSS initiatives.

    All volunteers are expected to:

    • Support the mission and goals of MD HIMSS
    • Contribute in a collaborative and professional manner
    • Maintain appropriate boundaries and avoid using volunteer roles for commercial or sales-driven purposes

    Volunteer Atendance Expectations and Participation Standards

    Active participation is essential to the success of MD HIMSS committees, initiatives, and volunteer activities. Volunteers are expected to demonstrate consistent engagement and contribution in their assigned roles.

    Attendance Expectations

    Volunteers are expected to:

    • Attend all scheduled committee meetings, working sessions, and assigned activities when reasonably possible
    • Arrive prepared and ready to contribute
    • Actively participate in discussions, initiatives, and assigned tasks
      Communication of Absences
    • If a volunteer is unable to attend a scheduled meeting, they are expected to:
      • Notify the committee chair(s) or designated lead in advance, whenever possible
      • Communicate any anticipated extended absences or schedule conflicts
      • Remain engaged with committee work outside of meetings, as appropriate

    Participation Standards

    Volunteers are expected to:

    • Contribute meaningfully to the work of the committee or initiative
    • Complete assigned tasks and commitments in a timely manner
    • Maintain professional, collaborative, and respectful engagement with fellow members

    Volunteers who do not meet attendance and participation expectations may be subject to removal from their role.

    Specifically:

    • Volunteers who miss two (2) or more committee meetings without prior notice, or
    • Volunteers who demonstrate a consistent pattern of non-attendance or lack of active participation, may be removed from their volunteer position.
    • Such determinations will be made at the discretion of the committee chair(s) in coordination with MD HIMSS leadership, as appropriate.

    Discretion and Flexibility

    MD HIMSS recognizes that professional and personal obligations may occasionally impact availability.

    Committee chair(s) may exercise reasonable discretion in evaluating:

    • The frequency and context of absences
    • The volunteer’s overall level of engagement and contribution
    • Any extenuating circumstances communicated in a timely manner
