Role Descriptions
Mentor Role
Mentors support high school and college students as they develop their projects and prepare their final presentations. This includes helping with technical challenges, guiding project direction, and offering feedback on pitches.
We are looking for individuals who are comfortable working with tools commonly used in hackathons, such as web or app development frameworks, AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Cursor), design and prototyping platforms (e.g., Figma), version control systems (e.g., GitHub), submission platforms (e.g., Devpost), and low-code or no-code tools.
You do not need to be an expert in all of these areas. We are primarily looking for people who are familiar with one or more of these tools and can help participants troubleshoot issues, navigate challenges, and move from idea to a working prototype.
Mentors will:
- Commit to a 7-hour shift
- Rotate between teams to provide support as needed
- Assist with ideation, scoping, and problem-solving
- Help debug or troubleshoot projects across different tech stacks
- Guide teams in preparing clear and compelling presentations
- Support teams in aligning their projects with judging criteria (impact, innovation, feasibility, technical execution, and presentation)
- Many participants will be new to coding and hackathons, so patience, adaptability, and a supportive attitude are essential.
Mentors will receive a brief orientation or materials prior to the event to become familiar with expectations and judging criteria. Food will be provided.
Event Team Role
Volunteers play a key role in ensuring the event runs smoothly by supporting logistics and operations throughout the hackathon.
Responsibilities may include:
- Committing to a 5–7 hour shift
- Assisting with participant check-in and registration
- Distributing meals and supplies
- Supporting workshops and activities
- Helping with event setup and breakdown
- Coordinating opening and closing ceremonies
- Acting as chaperones for participants
Judge Role
Judges evaluate team projects based on technical execution, creativity, impact, and presentation quality. A scoring rubric will be provided.
Judges will:
- Attend a 4-5 hour judging shift
- Review and score team projects
- Provide constructive feedback to participants
Qualifications:
- College track judging: At least 2+ years of professional experience
- High school track judging: At least a junior in undergraduate studies (preferably in computer science or related field)
- Ability to evaluate projects across a variety of approaches, including coded applications, AI-assisted builds, prototypes, and design-focused solutions
- Strong understanding of what makes a project impactful, feasible, and well-presented
Judges may receive a brief orientation or materials prior to the event to review the rubric and expectations.
